Match report Despite a magnificent first league hundred of the season for youngster Gary Edwards, Fives and Heronians 1st XI were unlucky not to extend their winning streak last Saturday when they had much the upper hand of the drawn match with Colchester & East Essex. Losing the toss and being asked to bat first, Fives opening partnership of Edwards and Simon Fitzgerald set the tone and foundation for the innings putting together 62 before Fitzgerald was caught out for 37. Jeremy Mordrick then joined Edwards to put together a century partnership and when the former was bowled for 43, aussie star Kym Beazleigh made a brisk 36 before being caught in the deep. Further positive contribution allowed Fives to declare at 272 for 4, with Edwards unbeaten on 119.
Hopes of another 20 pointer were high when Tommy Clark and Reggie Coleman ripped into Colchester’s top order to reduce them to 27 for 3. However, these hopes were dented when skipper Kennedy and Allison put together a solid stand to steady the visitors ship. Allison had made a hard hitting 45 when Beazleigh produced what will surely be the catch of the season diving full length to give Jonny Kay his only wicket of the day. Chris White then took a further 2 quick wickets to raise Fives hopes again, but the visitors had by this time lost interest in trying to win the game and put the shutters up to ensure that the end result would be a draw.
