Match report F&H elected to field on damp slow Chigwell School wicket, having been diverted by wedding requirements at the Old Chigs. Harold Wood started slowly, but then took full advantage of the 3rd Xl's impression of England at Lords, a total of 8 catches being dropped and none held, before closing their innings at 258-3 after 50 overs. Whilst the bowling was tidy, morale sagged as the first three batsmen all survived fairly early chances, enabling each of them to pass 50 by some margin. Veteran bowler Keith Coleman made a welcome reappearance, only to suffer more than his fair share of missed chances.
Harold Wood opened with super-slow bowler Terry Pound who, coupled with the slow wicket, was difficult to hit without a giant wind-up on the part of the batsman. In spite of this and the early loss of Captain Kula, F&H proceeded in stately fashion and were well poised around 60-1. However in an attempt to accelerate the rate, leading batsmen Haider and Yonis both fell without making the really big score such a target required. Yousuf supplied some late order hitting to give the total respectability, however wickets fell regularly and F&H were all out for 181 with seven overs left. A disappointing end on a sunny day.
If half the catches had been held, Harold Wood may well have been held to 200-220, a more than achievable target.
