Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI v West Essex on Sat 17 Jun 2006 at 1.30
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Lost 3 wickets

Match report Fives won the toss and batted first despite the late arrival of several players - not the best preparation for the match! Uncle Yaz started in nonchalent form striking 3 fours in the first two overs and contionually pinching the strike. Clive, kept from the strike for so long after many years of taking the first ball of the inniongs, was roused to smite his first delivery to the cover boundary taking us to 24 off the first three overs. Thereafter the West Essex bowlers tightened their length and line, found a little movement and made us work hard. The pressure got to Uncle Yaz who perished attempting to work a straight one to leg and a lengthy period of consolidation by Clive and the Commander followed to give a platform of 98-2 in the 23rd over. A cameo 35 in 31 balls from the Skipper lifted the tempo and hit the dangerous Jenkins out of the attack but when three wickets fell quickly Fives were in some trouble at 157 for 5 with two U16's at the crease. Siraj and Chirag responded with style putting on 76 in 11 overs before Ali joined Chirag to add 22 in 10 minutes taking us to a respectable total. Chirag was unlucky not to be given the last over when on 49* but as West Essex had taken over three and a quarter hours to bowl 51 overs, the Skipper wanted the time to get a result.

Knowing that the the guy who made 140 against us in 90 mins last year was in the side, Fives kept the old ball and opened with spin at both ends. Bob and Amjad both bowled well with only 50 coming from the first 15 overs. The introduction of Uncle Yaz brought a wicket in his first over but this let Mr Butt come to the crease and power his way to 89 off only 63 balls. In hindsight, taking the new ball may have been a mistake as it flew from the bat th all parts during which time three catches went down. Siraj bowled a number of dangerous deliveries but failed to find the required level of accuracy and a third of the 42 runs he conceded were in wides which the flying Franklin was powerless to intercept. Ali followed an excellent runout by bowling thier number 7 buy by then the damage had been done. Once again Uncle Yaz showed the younger players the importance of bowling straight as all his three wickets were bowled, as were three of his five last week. Reminder for all 4th team bowlers: "4th team batters make mistakes - when they miss you have to be hitting the stumps!!!!!"
