Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Under 11 v Walthamstow on Sun 17 Jul 2011 at 9.00 am
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Lost by 13 runs

Match report In a change from the norm, cup versus friendly cricket for the first time this season, it could be argued losing a key player on the morning of the game isnt a great start. Things got worse before they got better as another player was on his way back from Birmingham. This resulted in Fives only have 8 at the scheduled start time. What an 8 we had though. They maybe young but you couldnt ask for a more enthustiastic group of players who despite losing most weeks are learning all the time and seem to be enjoying themselves.

Lead by newly elected head boy of Loyola, Charles Allen, who if a new name to some of you, is a cross between Usain Bolt with his athleticism between the wickets and Michael Atherton, when plotting his next field or bowling change.

Walthamstow started at a pace with their opener taking a liking to anything in his ark. The oppositions opening pair crashed their way to 70 off 10 overs and at the time one was wondering what it would do to our lads confidences if this run rate was maintained throughout the duration of the 20 overs.

However, Walthamstow couldnt keep this run rate going, as Sanjana and Shaan began to dry the runs up to the extent that we picked up three quick wickets for next to nothing. Walthamstow stumbled their way to 117, which was nowhere near as many as they looked like getting at one stage, although it should be acknowledged that this is 40 or so more than we usually get. Our extra player had turned up by this time which meant Fives had 9 batsman to take us to glory.

After losing two quick wickets, its fair to say the sides hopes hinged on Fives very own Usain Bolt. However, as with every great duo, think Torvill and Dean, Renny and Renata, Sooty and Sweep Charles needed a partner to stay with him if we were to challenge Walthamstows score. In 8 year old Rohan Barodia, he found a partner to keep him company, even if at times poor Rohan looked like he would need a ventalator to keep him going.

The running between the wickets was very much hit and run. The only problem is Charles runs twice as quick as anyone else and is often half way down the wicket the second the bowler has released the ball. Rohan is a very slight lad and his sole aim was to make sure bat hit ball. That was the easy bit, the hard bit was the scampering, diving and scurrying up and down the wicket with his bat, gloves, pads and helmet.

Fives dared to believe the impossible might be possible. With 60 on the board with still half the overs to bat the dream was on. However, after Rohan was given LBW and Charles had to retire, a bit of momentum was lost even though the 8 year olds Harry,Olly and Nyle kep the crowd interested.

Charles returned with 2 overs to go and 34 needed. Despite his best efforts, we ended up 13 runs short. It was a fanstastic skippers performance with his team mates all doing their best to pull off a shock win.
