Match report Fives were crowned Essex Indoor Champions for the 5th time in their history with a hard faught victory against Braintree (who thrashed Hadleigh & Thundersley in the other semi).
Fives batted first & put in an improved performance amasing a useful 137 off their 12 overs. Ballard 38 , Norris 26, Britton 25, Edwards 23 the main contributors. The key to the innings was not losing early wickets which allowed more freedom & risk taking in the last 4 or 5 overs.
In reply Braintree lost early wickets and were 28 - 3 off 4 overs mainly thanks to JK with 2 early wickets. JK finished with 3-17 in the innings & was responsible for another brilliant Braintree run out. He was the stand out bowler all evening. No doubt he will be telling everyone about it at the Club Dinner !!
Braintree now needed a miracle and Dave Hale (Braintree) stuck to his task and did reach retirement, but he was soon back in the middle as their sixth batsman was brilliantly stumped off a wide in the sixth over at 63. The last 2 batsman performed excellantly until Hale was run out, backing up, for 50 with the score of 114. It was all down to the last batsman to try and find the gaps, but off the fourth ball of the final over his was caught and bowled by Kay, for 32 with the reply standing on 124.
So it is Fives who return to the Centre to meet Hadleigh (Suffolk) in the next round on Saturday 16th Feb.
