Match report The early batters all failed to cope with a slow, stopping pitch and several of them obligingly popped gentle catches to waiting fielders. Nigel was extremely unlucky when a hard inside edge almost bounced over his stumps but just managed to nick a bail. This reduced us to 31 for 7, and with only 10 players we were looking into the abyss! Cometh the hour, cometh the man. Thuva entered at number seven and, following a full and frank discussion with his captain, exercised unusual restraint at the start of his innings. At the other end, U13 Rishin batted with mature composure in support, finally scoring his first run off his 50th ball and earning the respect of the opposition. By that time Thuva had cut loose with an array of very powerful shots and the partnership added 91 important runs, only 6 runs short of the 4th team record and within sight of batting bonus points at 122 for 8. Enter Portia who also played a vital supporting role adding 62 unbroken for the 9th wicket, just 5 short of the 20 year old record and taking us to the unimagined riches of 184 for 8 and 6 bonus points. Thuva ended on 118 n.o. with 12 fours and 7 sixes, a couple of them absolutely massive!
With Thuva being on a roll he was asked to open the bowling, prompting the opposition captain to say, "You've got to be kidding me!" After four overs and a wicket he retired to the boundary for a bit of a rest. Stow were getting ahead of the required rate so pace was taken off the ball by Yaz, Portia and Latif who all bowled well and economically, but without taking a wicket. Having got the asking rate over 6, we took a chance with Jai's left arm wrist spin which brought the breakthrough. This allowed Uriel and a second spell from Thuva to turn the screws and four more wickets followed. Unfortunately a couple of catches went down and we were unable to press for the win. Overall, a fantastic recovery from a dreadful position left us feeling like winners. Great individual performances from Thuva, Rishin, who also fielded very well and made a sharp catch look easy, and Portia in all three disciplines. Next week we need more restraint and concentration from the early batsmen, and better catching!
