Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Wanstead on Sat 10 Jul 2004 at 11.30
Match was Drawn

Match report Fives battled hard to earn what they thought was a well deserved draw against table topping Wanstead at the Paddock last Saturday. Unfortunately, rule 6g, paragraph iii states that "If the side batting second receives more than 25 overs, but the last over due in the match has not been bowled, then the match will be classed as Abandoned as a draw and each side receives 5 points plus any bonus points awarded in excess of 5 points at the time of abandonment". Therefore, despite there having been close on a hundred overs bowled in the match Fives were limited to only 5 points and not the 7 they thought they had worked so hard to achieve. Surely a section of the league rules that needs looking into sooner rather than later.
Fives won the toss and asked their visitors to bat on a day that always looked likely to provide plenty of covers activity. Chambers and Walters started strongly for Wanstead and it took the intoduction of skipper Jeremy Mordrick into the bowling attack to have Walters well caught by Brendan Smith for 23 and then closely follow this up by trapping the dangerous Adnan Akram LBW without troubling the scorers. Chambers made a comfortable half century and when he was out playing a loose cut shot also off of the bowling of Mordrick for 55, lunch was taken with Fives beginning to get themselves into the game. Unfortunately for Fives after lunch Wanstead batted like the top of the table outfit they are, despite some hard toiling from the home bowling, especially by James McKay, firstly Schoombie (38) and then Wanstead skipper Arfan Akram (57) helped Wanstead declare their innings at 257 for 8.
Despite the Wanstead boys enthusiasm to play in almost monsoon conditions, the start of the Fives innings was delayed due to rain and an early tea was taken. When play did resume Sheeny Edwards and James Swash got Fives away to a very positive start until Edwards was very well caught behind the stumps by young Smith. This wicket, as so often has been the case for Fives was closely followed by another, Gordon Whorlow unluckily found out by the slow pitch for 0. Mordrick and Swash put together a promising partnership until Swash was trapped LBW by Chambers for a well made 34. When Mordrick went , adjudged LBW for 22 and Gull followed soon afterwards things were looking ominus. Nick Rotsey however came in and batted excellently to make his maiden first team league half century and although Fives had a mini collapse just before heavy rain ended proceedings at around 7-20, the draw always looked the likely result........which it would have been in the absence of rule 6g, paragraph iii !!!!
