Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Saffron Walden on Sun 09 May 2004 at
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Lost 1 run

Match report After a magnificent all-round team display on Sunday afternoon, Fives & Heronians fell just short in their bid to knock out 2002 National Cup winners Saffron Walden in this 1st round all Essex clash. Winning the toss and fielding first, Fives young opening attack of Tom Clark and Jonny Kay were put under early pressure by the attacking play of Saffron openers Sparrow and Gladwin. They handled this pressure well, bowled very tightly and were rewarded when Gladwin was run out for just 10. When Clark and Kay were replaced by Jeremy Mordrick and Chris White, the tight bowling and fielding continued. When Mordrick firstly removed Earl and then in the following over White removed the dangerous Sparrow Fives were beginning to get on top. Soon afterwards Mordrick clean bowled MacKinley to leave the home side on 66 for 4. To their credit Saffron managed to string a couple of reasonable partnerships together, but never got on top of the bowling, with James McKay and Terry Ballard also bowling very tightly.
Chasing a total of 141, Fives knew their task would not be easy against a team who have extensive experience in this competition. They lost Edwards early on LBW for just 1 run and then Dan Steven and Ballard put together a good partnership. Ballard playing in his normal flambouyant, shot playing manner, made a quick fire 23 before being caught and Stevens a patient 27 before being adjudged LBW. Despite the tight Saffron bowling, further excellent batting contributions came from White, Ben Britton and Kay and although Fives continued to lose wickets, still looked like being guided home to victory by James McKay. McKay's cool, collected innings left him on 22, facing the first ball of the final over with Fives 9 wickets down and requiring just 2 runs for victory. Saffron's Baker (who is an orthodox left arm spinner, turning the ball away from the right hander), bowled the first ball well pitched up, McKay played a big strided forward defensive shot to the ball outside the off stump, the ball hit his pad and the umpire gave McKay out, game over.
An excellent, if unrewarded effort on Fives behalf and they now look forward to looking for revenge over Saffron when they meet again this Saturday in a league clash.
