Match report Brathwaite going through the gears

After the wonderful performance from the youth in the 2s last week, the skipper Ben Britton stuck with the core of the side in the first of the return fixtures that saw us travel to Chingford. The home captain informed Ben that they were a player short at the Toss and we offered a substitute fielder for the amicable opposition to which Chingford refused citing it’s our fault a player hasn’t turned up we will just have to make the best of it. Chingford duly won the Toss and decided to field in what could be described as a miserable drizzly day at best.

The venerable Brathwaite and Rotsey opened the innings and never looked in any real danger and proceeded to punish anything loose until Rotsey played all around one and was out for 25. At 62-1 young Jake Lloyd entered the fray and was very fortuitous to get the benefit of any doubt with a stumping decision when he was yet to get off the mark. A few Chingford players could feel it might not be their day, as not long afterwards Neil Brathwaite was dropped at mid off on 40 to, it must be noted, a very straightforward opportunity. Neil is never one to look a gift horse in the mouth and proceeded to plunder the now disheartened Chingford bowling to all parts of the ground on occasions even out of the ground. Chingford had no answer to the run spree several bowling changes ensued to try and quell the flow but Neil was ably supported by James Mckay who launched some fine destructive hitting in an innings which showed his fine team ethics. But the innings was all about the veteran Brathwaite going through the gears in a batting lesson from 50 to 100 to 150 to finish on 162 not out as Fives and Heronians declared on 300-4 after 52 overs. The declaration might have been earlier but Chingford had bowled at a good pace and the fine tea was taken at 3.50 pm with plenty of time for an experienced batting side to chase down anything on a good track.

Chingford reply got off to a bad start with Fletcher slashing wildly off Rotsey to young Summers at point, to bring together the home sides big guns of Alston and Billy Rhone. This was the crucial partnership if Chingford were going to make any inroads to the mammoth chase, they both started serenely putting a base in place before the suspected onslaught. Ben Britton led the troops well through the constant drizzle hoping to get enough overs to make it a match and not another abandonment.
He kept changing the youthful attack, striving for the breakthrough and it was 2nd eleven debutant Adita Banerjee who struck twice to remove both danger men. Alston and Rhone fell for 40 and 34 respectively both to catches from Jake Lloyd. From then onwards it was never a charge for victory for Chingford but a collecting of batting points. Bowling was not easy with a wet ball from all the constant drizzle, Jack Jerrom the spearhead of the young attack and Coleman were now bowling in tandem and despite some resistance from Peek and Baldcock Fives were driving home the advantage. Victory was in doubt due to the rain as much as the batting resistance from the final pair, but Coleman as ever was the man to strike the final blow bowling Offord as the rain intensified just before the umpires were due to take the players from the field.

Fives continue their fine season and remain the side to beat with Chelmsford hot on the heels with 8 matches to go, it will be a close campaign.
