Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Sunday Cup XI v Stanmore on Thu 18 Jun 2009 at 2pm
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report Fives and Heronians moved into the last 16 (round 3) of the Conference Cup with a thrilling run chase against Stanmore in the re-arranged 2nd round game at The Paddock on Thursday.

With the match arranged for mid-week to get a game in with the 3rd round taking place on Sunday, both sides were missing key personnel with Fives 2 main bowlers light in Johnny Kay and Rahul Bhome.

Stanmore, having won the toss and batted, looked to be taking advantage with some punishing stroke play early doors until a bizarre 10th over bowled by Nick Rotsey. The over consisted of 12 balls thanks to 6 wides (one which went for four) but the final wide had Jamaldeen stumped for 34 as the scoreboard read 100-1.

Nick Goh smacked 57 off 38 until Ed Buxton stemmed the flow of runs by getting Goh to mis-cue a drive which was taken well by Nick Rotsey at mid-off.

Fives then gradually fought their way back into the match as skip Terry Ballard collected 3-45 from 7 overs, Buxton himself 2-39 from 8 and Carlos Remy went wicket less in 9 overs but deserved at least 2 for his efforts in conceding just 25 runs.

Visiting captain Marc Reingold kept the national Twenty20 runners-up innings together with a unbeaten 83 off 75 as Stanmore posted an imposing 302-9 off their 45 overs.

With dept in the batting line-up, Fives were not downbeat starting their reply and Jason Whiting got the hosts off to as quick a start as Stanmore with a smash and grab 35 off 17 (4 fours and 2 sixes) before holing out with the score 51-1.

Neil Brathwaite and Ed Buxton then laid the foundations for a late assault with a very steady and classy 105 run partnership for the 2nd wicket until Buxton holed out to long-on for 37 off 62 and then Brathwaite was caught behind of leggy Jadav for a top innings score of 76 from just 71 balls including 10 beautifully stroked fours.

Carlos Remy (42 off 33, 3 fours, 3 sixes) and Glenn Jackson (40 off 51) added 80 for the next wicket until Remy retired hurt with a side strain picked up last Sunday and Jackson was caught at long-on as the tension mounted.

The equation came down to 51 off 30 balls as Ballard and Phil Apps got together. Ballard was dropped first ball but proceeded to smack 27 off 15 (2 fours, 2 sixes) in adding 40 in just 6 minutes with Apps who bludgeoned 26 not out from 13 with 2 fours and 2 huge sixes in one James Handcock over which cleared the ground into Green Lane as the target was brought down to less than a run a ball.

Despite Ballard holing out, Nick Rotsey hit a four to leave Fives requiring just 2 off 8 balls and he hit the winning run with still 6 balls to spare as Fives won an incredible match by 5 wickets.

Fives are at home again in the last 16 as SNEL champions Wanstead visit The Paddock on Sunday (21st June) for a local derby.
