Match report
A blistering start by Upminster saw them reach 55 in the first 5 overs aided by some short bowling and even an shorter boundary on one side. The introduction of Pete William's crafty left arm pegged the scoring rate but the surprise package was the venerable Rotsey wheeled out (almost literally) in desparation by skipper Thurston using every effort to avoid bowling himself. The real surprise was that three balls in 8 overs were actually straight but the bigger surprise was thet 3 batsmen consprired to miss them all. An unlikely C&B brought 4 for 45 from 8 overs followed by a swift return to the wheelchair! The skipper's determination not to bowl extended to 5 overs in two spells from Williams Jr, (Luke, 2 weeks past his 8th birthday) who managed to concede fewer runs per over than hot-shot Adrian Palmer. The Fives reply got off to a sorry start with Thurston edging a quick one in the first over and Rotsey being the victim of a dubious lbw decision (for which the opposing wicket keeper apologised in the bar faterwards!) Adrian departed to a stunning catch in the gully and it was left to Williams Sr and Alcorn to repair the damage. Young Tom batted well fro the second day running and helped put on a good 60. Thereafter the innings was enlivened by Lloyd Jr acting as a runner for his dad followed by an enterprisiong innings by young Luke who refused to be intimidated by a possee of close fielders. The highlight of the innings came when Lloyd Sr's injury became too serious for him to continue allowing Arthur Batten, playing his first match simce 1949 - yes, really - to face the last over, most of which were played with the middle of the bat, in partnership with Luke. It is thought that this age gap between the batsmen of well over 70 years may be some sort of record.
