EDDIE POULTER LOOKS BACK ON HIS YEAR IN OFFICE AS THE CCC PRESIDENT

Our club was both proud and privileged to have had a member in Eddie C Poulter as President of the Club Cricket Conference in 1999. His year began in February with the restructuring of the Conference administration and the setting up of the Management Board. Then in early March, the CCC tour party left the UK for Zimbabwe with eight supporters including Eddie and Joyce. The country was beautiful, the cricket was good and the hospitality excellent - needless to say, the tour was enjoyed by all.

On Eddie’s return the English season began with the introduction of the ECB Premier Leagues - a move aimed at improving standards in the recreational game and eventually producing better players. One season is too short to judge its effectiveness. A couple of years ago the CCC decided to play more President’s matches, if possible against clubs celebrating anniversaries. Eddie’s predecessor had four such games, Eddie had eight games whilst his successor, David Roberts will have twenty plus!

Eddie’s eight games took him to five counties and included visits to: Six clubs with anniversaries ranging from fifty years to two hundred and fifty years. One club in its cricket week. Finally, the traditional game against the President’s own club on the 15th Aug. 1999. The support provided at these matches was appreciated by Eddie and all at the Conference and thanks go to all concerned. The games were popular and seemed, more importantly, to be enjoyed by the host clubs.

It was a great compliment to the Conference and an honour to Eddie to be invited by the Evening Standard to adjudicate the ‘Man Of The Match’ award at the final of the Challenge Trophy on the 12th Sept. at the Oval. Later in the same month Eddie and Graham Turner (a CCC Life President) represented the Conference at the memorial service for Godfrey Evans at Canterbury Cathedral - a memorable if sad occasion.

“I consider it an honour for myself and for my club Fives and Heronians, to have been President of the CCC and offer my best wishes and thanks to David Roberts, my successor, for his consistent support during the last year. David will be a credit to the Conference in the millennium year”

said Eddie.

Eddie has since been elected a Life Vice-President for his services on the Club Cricket Council and for his Presidential duties. He will continue as a member of the CCC Executive Council.
