Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Chingford on Sat 31 Jul 2010 at 1.00 pm
Match was Drawn

Match report Fives & Heronians stretched their unbeaten run to 7 games with a hard-fought draw with Chingford in the local derby at The Paddock on Saturday in SNEL division one as captain Jonny Kay blocked out the final over to secure the draw.

Having won the toss again and electing to bowl, the decision looked a good one as Chingford struggled to 96-5 inside the 21st over.

After overnight and early morning rain, the wicket appeared to be favouring the bowlers and despite Jamie Porter (7-1-26-0) going wicketless in his 7 over stint he caused the Chingford batters a few problems with short balls.

That was the perfect foil for Irfan Ahmed at the other end who uprooted the stumps of Paul Shawyer (25), Paul Smith (0) and Robert Whitfield (32) with a superb inswinger and then two sizzling yorkers which saw middle stump on both occasions cartwheel out of the ground to leave the visitors 70-3 – and this after Chingford had raced to 51-0 inside 10 overs.

Skipper Jonny Kay replaced Porter at the pavilion end and after being hit for 2 fours by Sam Kirnon (18), Kay took revenge as another slog was well taken by Porter at mid-wicket with Chingford 83-4.

Shaun McMurray and James Hill then consolidated in adding just 17 in the next 6 overs but after the hard work, Hill (2) gave Phil Apps catching practice at point as his side had lost half their wickets before the half-way mark in the innings.

Then came the turning point in the match as Chingford captain Ben MacGregor flicked Kay to square-leg where Steven Doig appeared to take a routine catch – only to then drop the ball as he went to celebrate ala Herschelle Gibbs in the 1999 world cup at Headingley and MacGregor survived a huge let-off to make a calm 30 in 61 balls to recover the situation as he and McMurray added 60 for the 6th wicket before Doig finally bowled his man at 156-6.

McMurray calmly moved to 40 off 91 balls before he was next to go at 170-7 by cutting Doig to Apps at point and at this stage Fives should have finished off their opponents to have left a far more comfortable run chase.

However, a series of nagging partnerships saw Chingford reach 234-9 declared off 52 overs as 30 runs came off the final 3 overs thanks in the main to an unbeaten 44 off 39 balls (6 fours) from Matthew O’Sullivan. Ahmed (9-0-65-3), Kay (9-1-33-3) and Doig (10-0-48-3) all finished with 3 wickets a-piece.

The Fives reply followed a similar pattern to Chingford’s innings as Ed Buxton played positively for 45 off 47 balls (7 fours and 1 six) but played one shot too many and was caught at mid-off from MacGregor’s slow left-armers with the score 53-1 after 14 overs.

Next over Gary Edwards then ran himself out in attempting to take a quick single to cover for 12 to leave Fives 57-2.

Phil Apps hit 3 fours off one MacGregor over before he flashed at a wide ball from Lenny Daniels and edged behind for 17 at 81-3.

The key partnership for Fives if they were to win the game was surely between Ben Britton and Ahmed but with the situation in the match dictating a careful approach – the opposite to both batsmen’s usual style of play – just 25 were added between the pair as Chingford’s two batting heroes MacGregor and McMurray tied the Fives batters down with their spinners.

Ahmed fell lbw for 22 to the penultimate over before the last hour as Fives entered the final phase of the match requiring 6.4 runs-an-over to win but still 6 wickets in the tank.

Britton (32) and Rhaul Bhome (6) added 29 but after a big six from the former, both perished to MacGregor in the 32nd over with 97 runs still needed and at this stage victory looked out of the question.

The innings was given hope with another partnership of note between Glenn Jackson and Ali Zaidi of 30 for the 7th wicket but as was a feature of the reply, Fives lost a wicket at the wrong time as Zaidi hit McMurray to Nick Shawyer for 13 at 168-7.

Doig (6) and Porter (11) both attempted in vain to push Fives nearer the 235 target until McMurray got rid of both leaving the Paddock side 9 wickets down for 196 and still 22 balls left in the game to survive.

Jackson and Kay were able to bolt paddock door and despite a strong lbw appeal in the final over managed to see the match out and reach a final batting bonus point in the process as Fives ended on 205-9 off 46 overs to secure 8 points and a draw – Jackson unbeaten on 35 off 44 balls with 3 fours and 1 huge six and left thinking what might have been.

In truth, neither side did enough to win the match but Fives will be disappointed that their strong top 5 batting line-up all made double-figures but didn’t produce the telling contribution. They’ll also be unhappy that Jackson didn’t receive any real support in the latter half of the innings which was required to push for a win.

Fives stay 5th in division one but lost a little ground on 2nd place South Woodford who also drew as they now trail by 34 points but the cushion between Fives and 2nd bottom Westcliff is 41 points. With 5 games remaining in the season, the final timed match of the campaing is Fives visit to Orsett next week before the final 4 matches revert back to the 50 over format.
