Match report F&H 1st XI managed to hold Loughton to a draw in last Saturdays Shepherd Neame Essex League local derby. Fives won the toss and asked their hosts to bat on what could only be described as a “pudding” of a surface, for some reason the covers had not been utilised last week.
After an early success, when Andrew Coleman had Riz Akram well caught at first slip by Terry Ballard, Loughton made steady progress against some ordinary Fives bowling. Although there were some tight bowling spells, especially by Jeremy Mordrick, Loughton’s total of 223 always looked like being a tall order for Fives to chase.
In reply, Fives were in early trouble when both Ballard and Ben Britton were dismissed to leave the score on 2 for 2. Mordrick and firstly Kym Beazleigh, then Nick Rotsey, repaired the damage to a certain degree, but when Andrew McGarry dimissed Rotsey and Simon Fitzgerald with successive balls, survival was Fives only option. Although Mordrick was dismissed by the penultimate ball of the match, his contribution of 51, had by then secured the draw.
