Match report Fives & Heronians 1st XI recorded their first league win of the season against Orsett at the Paddock last Saturday. Fives skipper Simon Fitzgerald won the toss and asked the visitors to bat on a soft, slow looking wicket. Orsett made the most of some loose early bowling to put 32 on the board, before Chris White was introduced into the attack and Fives achieved a breakthrough when he trapped Polybank LBW with his first delivery. Although a further wicket fell, it wasn't until Jonny Kay had the dangerous Katz well caught at mid-wicket by Jeremy Mordrick that Fives began to take control of the game. With White and Mordrick, who was now operating up the Paddock hill, both bowling extremely tight, Orsett were reduced to 147 for 9. However, a stubborn last wicket stand between Cracknell and Humphrey allowed Orsett to post a respectable total of 194 for 9 after 66 overs. White taking 4 for 48 from a marathon 23 overs and Mordrick 4 for 36 from 14.
In reply, Fives were in early trouble when Daniel Stevens went with score at only 2. Fitzgerald and Mordrick then batted very sensibly to build a partnership of 96 to take the home side within 100 of their target. However, when Mordrick went for 40, it triggered a mini collapse with Fitzgerald and Ben Britton going with the following 2 balls. Aussie Kym Beazleigh and the impressive looking Glen Jackson repaired the damage in putting together the partnership that as good as sealed victory. Although Jackson was bowled when on 22, Dereck Pettet joined Beazleigh, who finished unbeaten on 58, to see Fives to their first 20 point return of the summer.
