Match report Fives & Heronians 1st XI relegation worries were eased last Saturday when they extracted maximum points from their "must win" home fixture against rock bottom Shenfield. After losing the toss on five consecutive occasions, F&H skipper Simon Fitzgerald pulled the master stroke of sending out vice-captain Ben Britton to win a vital toss for the home side and ask Shenfield to bat. Fives opening bowler's, Tom Clarke and Chris White, bowled tightly early on, however, the visitor's opening batsmen, Moore and Webber, proved extremely stubborn. It wasn't until Jonny Kay and Jeremy Mordrick was introduced into the attack that Kay dismissed Moore thanks to a tidy catch in the gully by Kym Beazleigh and Mordrick clean bowled Tappin to reward some hard work in the morning session. After lunch wickets were hard to come by in the sweltering conditions, however, Fives bowlers and fielder's stuck to their task and when the Shenfield innings closed at 195-7 a home victory should have been a formality.
This victory looked even more likely when Simon Fitzgerald and Sheeny Edwards put on 73 in 15 overs for the first wicket, Fitzgerald being particularly savage like against Shenfield's opening attack. When Edwards went, Mordrick joined Fitzgerald and the two continued to bat sensibly taking their team to 115 and within sight of victory, with time not a factor. The shape of the game changed however when the two veterans were removed in consecutive balls to start what was to become a middle order collapse that saw Fives lose 7 wickets for 30 runs. At 145-8, what had earlier looked like an easy win, now looked an impossible task. Jonny Kay and James McKay, however, showed the earlier batsmen what was required with some sensible, resolute batting. This stand proved a winning one, with both ending unbeaten to give Fives their desperately needed 20 points.
