Match report Losing the toss proved too big a handicap on a damp track that dried
progressively during the afternoon. Having been inserted Fives suffered the
early loss of Franklin to a ball that was unplayable - his words, but
apparently supported by our umpire. Enter Alan Rotsey for only his second
match of the summer who proceeded to play himself in - well, no he didn't
actually - with a large number of energetic aerial shots including being
caught off a high no-ball when he had made 10, making light of a difficult
stopping wicket. Alan settled in to play well in the conditions making 72
off 92 balls, a rate nobody else including his slogging dad could approach.
all day. Fives seemed well placed at 133 - 2 off 32 overs but the middle
and lower order were unable to overcome tight bowling and added only 53 off
the last 20 overs. Ardliegh Green, left with what would have been 60 overs
to bat (surely an anomaly in this year's playing regulations which needs to
be addressed) paced their response very well with one of the openers making
a slow but very assured 60 and the others batting round him. Excellent
ground fielding was let down when a couple of straightforward catches to
mid-off went down allowing Green to ease home by four wickets with three
overs to spare. The only consolation was that second place South Woodford
were held to a draw by Ilford leaving Fives 9 points clear to the top of the
table.
