South Woodford v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI on Sat 20 Jul 2002 at 1-30pm
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won 64 runs
Match report
After much deliberation over a dodgy weather forecast and a track record of winning when chasing, Fives decided to bat first with Bansal and Surry getting us off to a flying start with powerful shots and excellent running between the wickets. Bansal was particularly severe on their openers and moved to 50 off 42 balls. After an opening stand of 96 in 17 overs Fives began to struggle as the ball became softer and the top of a dry pirtch started to loosen. The next 20 overs yielded only 70 runs at a cost of 5 more wickets. At this point the 4th's opening bowlers Brogan and Charlton came together and batted with great good sense mixed with bursts of aggression and good running to put on 48 and take us past the psychologically important 200 mark.
Starting with the old ball, Fives made an important early breakthrough when Bob Speller removed the normally prolific Butt with the help of an excellent catch by Brogan at long on. At the other end, Mark Speller running down the hill was troubled by no balls but beat the bat on several occasions and was rewarded with a spectacular diving catch by Delboy Maddison at first slip. Derek followed this with another masterstroke as his first ball loosener- a high full toss - was obliging deposited into the hands of a waiting deep square leg by their classiest batsman. He followed this with another very sharp slip catch off Brogan and another wicket to reduce South Woodford to 50 for 5 in the 19th over. Alan Rotsey making one of his rare appearances between white water canoeing and water polo should have had three wickets in his first over but two hard chances went down. Stubborn resistance took Woods to 102-6 at the start of the last 20 at which point the new ball was taken. Drew Brogan was exceptionally unlucky, beating the bat frequently and having two catches edged just over the slips. RitchieCharlton took the more direct approach and bowled their skipper to end a stubborn 15 over partnership. A couple more bowling changes were required to shift the last man leaving Fives the winners with 6 overs to spare by 64 runs.
