Match report On a scorching day at Old Chigs Fives lost the toss and were inserted - a mixed blessing since Hornchurch are notoriously negative and difficult to remove. Tim Murphy got us off to a lively start making 47 of an opening stand of 79 in the first 20 overs accompanied by a somewhat sedate Clive Franklin. Late replacement Peter Sherwood looked in excellent touch in only his second innings of the season before falling to a stunning catch on the deep midwicket boundary. The arrival of the ancient Rotsey galvanised Clive (a bit) into a higher rate of scoring and a stand of 138 in the next 25 overs saw Fives past the 200 to a declaration before halfway in the playing time. Charlton, and particularly Brogan, opened very effectively to attacking fields and chiselled the first two out in 11 overs. At this point the Hornchurch skipper entered and set about playing for the draw with only two wickets down!!! Hornchurch opener Mitchell, under orders, batted a few minutes short of two hours for 24 and only one batsman showed a willingness to strike the ball making 26 off 19 and showing the rest of the team how it could be done. Rotsey was slower than usual to switch the bowling around claiming that heat exhaustion slowed the mental processes having batted for an hour and half. (The rest of the team put it down to him being too old.) Eventually, young Hamad Sayyed was summoned to the attack and responded very well taking 3 - 21 but in the end the last two wickets eluded Fives who finished with 11 points.
