Match report Readers Sunday Championship Match

The opening Readers Sunday Championship match of the season ended in narrow defeat at Hertford.

With certain members of the team nursing sore heads and sweating neat alcohol following the previous evening's excesses at the Club BBQ, fielding first on one of the warmest afternoons of the summer so far was not universally popular. However, a fiery opening spell from Reggie supported by Johnny Kay had Hertford on the back foot in the early stages as they crawled along at under 3 an over. But the second wicket added over 100 setting up the Hertford lower order for a late onslaught. Macca picked up 5 wickets during the onslaught but at a cost of 60 runs from 7.3 overs. Hertford were eventually dismissed for 249 in the last of their 45 overs.
The challenging target looked even more daunting when James Lawes departed bowled first ball, Ian Rotsey followed soon after caught behind chasing a wide one. Steve Ambridge joined KD in adding 16 for the third wicket before KD was bowled for 19. Cheery Neary and Johnny Kay came and went cheaply and at 85-5 after 20 overs the game was virtually over. But Steve and James Mckay took the score to 124 before Steve was caught in the deep for an excellent 77, which included 10 fours and 2 sixes. Brian Berkin batting up the order added 26 with James before perishing going for a quick single. Macca then joined James in smashing the ball to all parts adding 69 in under 9 overs, both then fell in quick succession James for 49 and Macca for 38. The end then came fairly rapidly, all out for 222 with 19 balls still remaining.
