Ardleigh Green v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 22 May 2010 at 12.30 pm
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Lost By 31 Runs
Match report
Fives put in a largely disappointing performance to lose by 31 runs at Ardleigh Green.
On a sweltering hot day at Central Park, a bad day for Fives started by losing the toss and having to field first.
Fives didn't help themselves with Irfan Ahmed conceding a number of foot fault no-balls and thus free hits which got the Green openers, particularly the hard hitting Freddie Butt (50), off to a flyer which Fives never recovered from - not to mention the ground fielding which probably gave Green an extra 30 or so runs.
Chris White (who took the 1st three wickets) and Stuart Knapman (who started with 3 consecutive maidens and finished with figures of 10-3-46-1) started to claw Fives back into the match with some superb bowling which slowed the rate down.
However, Green captain Roy Smith (85) was in imperious form and with 16 year old Tom Oakley (50) forged a superb 4th wicket stand of 118 to effectively take the game away from Fives.
By the time Rahul Bhome was introduced into the attack much later than usual on a slow track, Smith took a liking and disptached him for several huge straight sixes as Bhome conceded 50 runs in 7 overs and Bilal Ashfaq who was Fives best bowler last week didn't get onto bowl.
Smith was then oddly run out backing-up and Ahmed came back to clean-up the tail and finish with 4-68 along with White who took the final wicket in the last over although having picked-up 4-32 didn't get through his allotted 10 overs having bowled just 7.4 overs.
Green finished on 276 all out with 2 balls of the 50 overs not used and Fives needed a solid start in reply.
Sadly that didn't happen as the luckless Gary Edwards dragged onto his stumps for 2 and Terry Ballard slogged a good length ball straight to mid-on for 6, 29-2.
Dan Stevens and Phil Apps recovered the situation with 42 for the 3rd wicket but both fell within 9 runs to leave Fives on the brink.
Stevens was looking back to his best having cover driven a wonderful six but was unluckily stumped as the ball deflected off the keepers pads and back onto the stumps with Stevens having just dragged his back foot out of the crease for 23.
Apps was in his best form of the season having played some crunching drives and cuts including a gorgeous and effortless straight driven six but played the same shot soon after and was caught for 42 by the strategically placed fielder at long-off as Fives were 80-4.
Jason Whiting then planted his foot straight down the pitch without offering a shot and was lbw for 5 as Fives were 89-5 and an embarrassing defeat looked on the cards.
However, Ahmed and Bhome then got together and added a superb record 1st XI 6th wicket partnership of 132 to turn the game back in Fives favour. Bhome (56 off 101 balls) was solid and played a great anchor role while Ahmed mixed defence and attack as he smacked 91 from 68 balls which included 8 fours and 4 sixes.
Green's bowlers and fielders started to look ragged but Smith made the decision to re-introduce Cook who then bowled both Ahmed and Bhome with perfect slower balls in quick succession as both looked to see Fives home.
By that stage Fives required 50 from the final 5 overs with just 3 wickets in hand but big hitters Knapman (2) and White (1) were also cleaned up by Cook and the end was soon neigh as a brave Bilal Ashfaq (7) holed out to deep mid wicket as Fives were bowled out for 245 after 47.3 overs to lose by 31 runs.
In truth it was a very poor performance which only a couple of players can take any credit from and there is much for the team to think about with a trip to promotion favourites Chingford next Saturday.
