Hutton v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 26 Jun 2010 at 1.00 pm
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won by 6 wickets

Match report Irfan Ahmed's brilliant 101 off 61 balls and a return to form for Gary Edwards with a classy 96 not out saw Fives gain just their 2nd win of the season in a crucial bottom of the table clash at The Polo Field to win by 6 wickets in SNEL division one.

After losing another toss, Fives were asked to field in blistering heat but after a much improved performance to get the better of a draw last week, the Paddock side continued in that vein by reducing the visitors to 90-4.

Ahmed started the ball rolling as Vanner edged to Ben Britton at 2nd slip who took a good catch to see the opener fall for 16.

Hutton's overseas player Payne looked good for 26 until he was smartly stumped by Glenn Jackson off Rahul Bhome who then had Hasan (26) caught by captain Jonny Kay at mid-off during his marathon 17 over spell in collecting 2-74.

After some lack lustre running between the wickets for the Hutton batsman, the hosts captain Chris McNally looked to improve this but after 4 nicely ran singles he then pushed straight to Neil Brathwaite at cover who picked-up the ball and aimed a superb direct hit at the bowlers end to see McNally suicidally ran out and Fives very much on top.

David Hammond and Simon Thurston then turned the tide in Hutton's favour with a superb 5th wicket stand of 160 as Thurston rotated the strike with dabs and pushes and Hammond having consolidated early on reaching his 50 from 82 balls than ran riot to plunder 124 not out from just 118 balls with his 2nd 50 taking just 28 balls!!!

Kay returned to the attack to have Thurston caught at long-off by another good Britton catch as Hutton declared their 52 overs at 263-5.

On what was a good wicket and given the importance of the game, Fives knew a solid start would set them up for a run chase and Edwards and Brathwaite provided just that with an opening stand of 67 until Braths was lbw to left-arm spinner Cocklin for a well made 30.

Dan Stevens then chipped Cocklin to mid-on for 0 and after an extra cover 6, Terry Ballard was very unlucky to be brilliantly caught by McNally at mid-on off Jamie Vanner as the Hutton skipper dived to his right and took the catch behind his body as Ballard was out for 11.

This left Fives 90-3 and a special innings was required to get the innings back on track.

Enter overseas star Ahmed who from ball one looked to attack and duly lofted his 3rd ball over the ropes for 6 as he started his innings as he meant to go on with a brilliant array of attacking shots.

He raced to 50 off 40 balls and by the time he fell for an outstanding 101 off just 61 balls, Fives were within 20 runs of a much need victory.

During his knock Ahmed smacked 8 fours and 7 sixes and he was particularly harsh on left-arm spinner Cocklin who he hit for 5 massive straight sixes - one six was so huge that it landed on the square of Hutton's 2nd pitch!!! Ahmed also pulled 2 big sixes over the pavilion into the forest during the carnage.

At the other end, Gary Edwards whose previous highest score of the league season was 10, looked back to his best with a classy and assured 96 not out off 118 balls which included a number of sumptuous fours especially 2 square driven fours all along the ground - 2 shots of the highest order.

With Edwards falling just short of his deserved century, it was left to Britton (6 not out) to hit the winning runs with a lofted four as Fives cantered to a 6 wicket win with 6 overs of the last hour still remaining.

Whilst Fives stay just above the relegation zone, the win gives Jonny Kay's men a 14 point buffer over Hutton and further confidence going into 3 home games on the trot which starts with next Saturdays visit of local rivals and table topping South Woodford.
