Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v South Woodford on Sat 03 Jul 2010 at 1.00 pm
Match was Tied
Match report
Fives and South Woodford produced a thrilling last ball finish at The Paddock on Saturday as their SNEL division one match ended in a remarkable tie.
Chasing 302 to win in 41 overs, South were cruising to their target thanks to a blistering 118 off 88 balls from their skipper Riz Akram – an innings which contained 13 fours and 5 huge sixes - and the target was reduced to 8 to win from the final over with 1 wicket remaining.
Last man Simon Correya slashed a wide ball from Fives overseas star Irfan Ahmed to the point boundary for 4 from the 4th ball of the last over before pushing a single to leave the scores level and South requiring 1 run from the last ball of the match to win the game.
However, Ahmed produced a sizzling yorker to uproot James Malin’s stumps to leave the match tied.
On another blistering hot afternoon, Fives won the toss (if only because Jonny Kay was late arriving to the ground due to work commitments leaving vice-captain Gary Edwards to do the honours) and not surprisingly decided to bat first.
Edwards and Neil Brathwaite made a steady start to move to 45 without loss after 14 overs until Brathwaite was caught in the slips for 23.
Ed Buxton played positively on his return to the 1st XI after injury to score 47 off 59 balls with 7 fours and a straight six off spinner Correya until he attempted to repeat the shot and was bowled despite a 2nd wicket stand of 65 with Edwards who had earlier been caught at slip off Correya to the 2nd ball after the drinks break for a nicely made 45.
That double blow left Fives 125-3 during the 31st over but Ben Britton entered the fray and smacked a 4 and a 6 from the 2nd and 5th balls he faced and his superb counter-attack saw him race to 58 off just 42 balls which in total included 8 fours and 2 maximums in a brilliant partnership of 108 in only 13 overs with Ahmed.
Ahmed himself top scored again in taking his league run tally to 464 in 9 games at an average just over 50 with an attacking 77 off 60 deliveries (9 fours and 3 sixes) until Malin returned to the attack to remove both Britton and Ahmed to leave Fives 276-5.
The hosts ended up batting their full entitlement of 52 overs to declare on 301-8 with Terry Ballard (13) and Rahul Bhome (11) scoring quick cameos at the end.
South to their credit went all-out for the victory and were always up with the rate in the reply but lost regular wickets and going into the last 20 overs the target was 140 off 120 balls with 8 wickets in tack.
Jamie Porter then returned to the attack to collect superb figures of 5-61 off 12 overs with his sheer pace which included the key wicket of Akram with Jonny Kay picking-up 3-64 from 10 overs as the match went down to the final delivery.
One sour note from the match was a serious injury to the webbing of Brath’s right hand as he attempted a catch at short gully from a shot which rocketed off the bat – an injury which looks set to keep the opener out for the remainder of the season.
The tie saw Fives secure 15 points from the match against table topping South Woodford to move the Paddock outfit up one place to 7th and more crucially now 23 points above the relegation zone with exactly half the season remaining – next week sees new leaders Ardleigh Green visit The Paddock.
