Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Ardleigh Green on Sat 10 Jul 2010 at 1.00 pm
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won by 65 runs

Match report Fives & Heronians extended their unbeaten run to 4 games after thumping SNEL division one leaders Ardleigh Green by 65 runs at The Paddock on Saturday.

A target of 229 might have looked light but Fives defended the score with aplomb thanks to fiery and hostile opening spells of fast bowling from Jamie Porter (7.4-1-33-4) and overseas star Irfan Ahmed (7-0-47-3) which the Green batsman weren’t able to deal with.

Captain Jonny Kay won just his 2nd toss of the season and on the hottest day of the year so far decided to bat first.

Fives again made a solid but slow start and lost Gary Edwards for just 1 with the score 13-1 in the 9th over.

Phil Apps (promoted back to the number 3 slot) and Ed Buxton (who opened the innings) then added a fine 2nd wicket partnership of 82 inside just 15 overs.

Apps took the attack to the Green bowlers with 6 fours and 1 six in making 47 off 45 balls before he become the first of Ali Aslam’s 7 wickets (20.1-1-75-7).

Ahmed joined Buxton at the crease to add 49 for the next wicket before mis-timing a lofted drive and was caught on the long-off boundary for 29 off 43 balls (3x4, 1x6).

Meanwhile, Buxton was holding the innings together with what was to be a match highest score of 57 from 107 balls and although it wasn’t the most fluid of knocks, there were still 6 fours, a lofted six and a 5 thanks to overthrows which were pleasing to watch.

However, Buxton then nicked behind off Aslam and Terry Ballard was out 3rd ball for 0 from the same bowler to leave Fives in trouble from a position at 150-5 off 38 overs.

Ben Britton continued his superb form by blasting his first ball out of the ground for six in making 29 from just 23 balls with 4 further boundaries and in partnership with in-form Chris ‘Chalky’ White added a crucial 43 together before Britton was Aslam’s next victim – caught at long-off.

Dan Stevens was brilliantly stumped by Farid Butt down the leg-side for 1 and then White having just seen Fives to maximum batting points was the 5th wicket for Aslam after making a very usual 21 off 31 balls which included a four and the 2nd 5 of the innings!!!

At 202-8 with just 4 overs remaining, the innings was given a boost thanks to 2 cameos of 17 off 12 balls (2x4, 1x6) from Steve Doig and 10 off 12 balls from Jamie Porter (2x4) as Fives rallied their final score to 228 all out from the 1st ball of the last over of the innings with Porter giving Aslam his 7th scalp.

Porter then starred with the ball with 2 wickets in the 1st over of the reply with White taking a superb diving catch at square-leg to capture Bayfield for 0 and then a superb inswinger which jagged back in off a length and clipped the top of the stumps of Green’s bowling hero Aslam for just 2 which left the score 4-2 after 1 over.

In his next over Porter then secured the key wicket of visiting captain Roy Smith who could only guide a rising ball to Ahmed at 2nd slip and leave Green in tatters at 7-3.

Ahmed then got in the act as Krishnan was out in identical fashion to his skipper with Britton taking a smart catch behind the wicket for 10 as Green were 23-4 after 4 overs – 4 overs that were full of wickets and no-balls!!!

Talented 16 year old Thomas Oakley then played a superb knock of 53 from 67 balls with 10 fours as he and Cook steadied the ship to take the score to 61 before Cook became the first of 2 wickets for slow left-armer Doig (8-1-37-2) as a mis-timed pull was wonderfully caught by Dan Stevens over his head running back from mid-wicket.

That brought the dangerous Farid Butt to the crease but inexplicably he tamely clipped his 7th ball straight to Doig at mid-on off Jonny Kay (8-2-45-1) to leave the visitors in all sorts at 61-6.

At this stage Green went down fighting thanks to a blistering 53 off 34 balls (6 fours and 2 sixes) from Paul Hurworth in adding an innings top partnership of 46 with the impressive Oakley.

Oakley, however, was next to go as he too meekly surrendered his wicket by driving to Ahmed who was positioned exactly for that shot at short cover to leave Green 107-7.

Hurworth’s fireworks along with 14 from Alex Cason at least gave the visitors 2 batting bonus points and some hope but superb yorkers from Ahmed saw both batsmen’s’ stumps knocked out of the ground and Porter also returned to have last man Simmons well caught by Doig diving forward at third man as Ardleigh were all out for 163 inside the 8th over of the last hour to complete a superb victory – a fantastic team effort.

Fives move up to 6th in division one on 112 points – 23 clear of the relegation slots - after their 3rd victory of the season and next weekend Hornchurch visit The Paddock for a 3rd straight home game.
