Match report Fives & Heronians produced a quite brilliant batting display to chase down an almost unassailable target of 324 in just 39 overs to beat Hornchurch at The Paddock in SNEL division one.

A scintillating 4th wicket partnership of 112 off just 55 balls helped to seal a remarkable win in match where well over 600 runs were scored for the loss of just 8 wickets!!!

On another warm day, Jonny Kay lost the toss and Fives had to spend 3 and a quarter hours in the field as Hornchurch racked-up what looked an imposing score of 323-5 declared from 52 overs.

One of last weeks bowling heroes Jamie Porter (10-1-50-2) captured the early breakthrough as he had Billy Gordon caught behind by Ben Britton for 16 to leave the visitors 39-1.

Thereafter, consistent batting and some poor fielding saw visiting captain Paul Murray (94 off 125 balls, 5x4, 3x6) and Simon Savides (79 off 70 balls, 11x4) share a 2nd wicket stand of 140 until Steve Doig captured both caught on the boundary in collecting 2-66 off 10 overs.

Chris Sains then launched 58 off just 46 balls which included 4 sixes and 5 fours and thanks to quick-fire unbeaten knocks of 34 from 17 by Jamie Sorrell and 15 off 8 by Richard Burd, Hornchurch were able to compile what looked a match winning score especially when Ed Buxton nicked behind second ball of the reply for 0.

Phil Apps then hit a belligerent 77 off only 56 balls with 14 fours and 1 six as he shared 129 with Gary Edwards for the 2nd wicket before being bowled by Dean Skipper.

Irfan Ahmed then kept the momentum by hitting 57 from 33 balls (7x4, 1x6) in a 3rd wicket partnership of 83 with Edwards as Fives headed into the last 20 overs with still a mammoth 175 to win.

Ahmed and Edwards took the equation down to 112 off 10 overs until the former was brilliantly stumped down the legside by Savides off Whitlock at 212-3.

Enter Ben Britton who turned the game on it's head with a stunning 78 not out off only 33 deliveries with 6 fours and 5 sixes as he and Edwards launched their assault on the target.

Their brilliant stand of 112 off only 55 deliveries saw the ball fly to all parts with Britton blasting his 50 off 21 balls which included a number of straight sixes.

Edwards played his way to his 2nd 96 not out of the season from 112 balls with 11 crisp boundaries and the carnage saw a ran two and a four overthrow costing 6 as Hornchurch lost their rag and Fives cantered to victory.

Such was their dominance with the bat that there were 2 overs of the last 20 remaining when Gary Edwards pushed the winning runs and cap a superb win.

Fives stay 6th in division one but pull further clear of the relegation zone and visit bottom club Westcliff next Saturday.
