Orsett v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 07 Aug 2010 at 1.00 pm
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets
Match report
Fives & Heronians seven match unbeaten run came crashing to a halt after a heavy seven wicket defeat vs Orsett in SNEL division one.
Despite a promising start at 35-0 inside 12 overs having won the toss and electing to bat at an overcast School Lane, Fives collapsed to just 145 all out after only 44.5 overs and the hosts had little trouble in reaching the target just before the start of the final hour at 6pm.
Openers Gary Edwards and Ed Buxton appeared to have weathered the early storm as Orsett bowled the ball in the right areas and the Fives pairing struggled to time the ball except for the odd boundary.
The first wicket fell inside the 12th over as Buxton played inside a swinging delivery from Alex Karkoski and was bowled for 14.
Phil Apps played his usual aggressive self in making 13 of the 15 runs he added with Edwards until he got an unplayable rising ball from Phillip Landman which Apps could only fend to Kevin Sargent behind the stumps at 50-2.
Next over saw a rare failure for Fives overseas player Irfan Ahmed as he loosely drove leg-spinner Mo Ahktar to Shahid Khan at short gully to leave the visiting Paddock side in trouble at 57-3 inside the 18th over.
Ben Britton and Edwards then shared 31 for the 4th wicket as it appeared Fives were starting to recover but after hitting 3 fours in 15, Britton was run out after being called through for a quick single and only just failed to make his ground at the striking end.
Next over Edwards then uncharacteristically slashed at a wide ball from Steve Mendes and was caught behind for a hardworking 37 off 84 balls which included 6 fours but at 88-5 after 25 overs Fives were up against it.
It didn’t get any better as the remaining Fives batsman all tamely surrendered their wickets in falling to 120-9 with Ahktar going on to collect 5-52 from 15 overs with 3 maidens as Ali Zaidi and Jamie Porter both got out to carbon copies of Ahmed’s wicket and Glenn Jackson and Rahul Bhome both giving out-fielders simple catches.
Only a last wicket stand of 25 between captain Jonny Kay who plundered 4 fours in 16 off 17 deliveries and Steven Doig (21 not out) saw Fives at least collect 2 batting bonus points and set a target that their bowlers might be able to defend.
However, some wayward bowling including several no-balls meant Orsett raced to 69-0 inside the 15th over until Rahul Bhome captured hosts skipper Wayne Read for 35 off 51 balls to a good catch by Phil Apps.
Jonny Kay then saw bowling hero Ahktar slog high to mid-on where vice-captain Edwards held to a fine catch for 12 and Bhome (2-40) collected another wicket as Sargent trod on his stumps whilst attempting a pull as Orsett stuttered to 97-3 off 23 overs.
But any hope Fives might have had of completing a famous victory were scuppered as opener Phil Keeping dropped anchor to finish on 52 not out off 82 balls and Jason Plom attacked to end 29 not out off 25 balls as the pair saw Orsett home for a 7 wicket win just after 6pm.
A match for Fives to forget but the 3 bonus points collected sees the side stay 5th in division one on 161 points with 6th place Hadleigh the visitors to The Paddock next weekend.
