Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Hadleigh and Thundersley on Sat 14 Aug 2010 at 12.00 pm
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets

Match report Fives and Heronians lost their second game in a row, beaten comprehensively by a good all round Hadleigh unit. Skipper Jonny Kay lost a crucial toss that played a big part in the result of this game. Hadleigh's captain , Adam Fleming, had no hesitation in electing to bowl in what promised to be very helpful bowling conditions with thick cloud cover overhead and after the recent rain. Hadleigh bowled tightly and with good discipline on a helpful wicket and Fives lost regular wickets throughout their allotted 50 overs. Only Nick Rotsey, fresh into the side after scoring heavily in the Second team in recent weeks, offerred any real resistance. His superb knock of 74 not out in tough conditions with wickets falling regularly around him was very impressive, and showed what could be done with skilful application and a combination of a strong defence and some brutal boundary hitting. There was good support for Rotsey from Number 9 Steven Doig, and Fives ended their innings on 195 all out in the final over of their 50. In tough conditions this looked a competitive score but nothing more than that.

Hadleigh's batsmen took to their task with skill and calmness and, in truth, made light work of the target. Fives' bowlers tried all they could but a couple of heavy rainfalls actually helped the Hadleigh batsmen as the wet ball did not swing and spin as much as the ball did in the previous innings. Saying that, Fives bowlers will be disappointed that they did not take more than 3 Hadleigh wickets, as Overseas star Dan Jackson, fellow opener Joe Robbins and Jon Waddingham proceeded to knock the required runs off with a minimum of fuss, Hadleigh reaching 197 for the loss of only 3 wickets.

Fives skipper Jonny Kay, understandably disappointed after the last 3 performances, said: "We simply did not play well enough on the day. We must remember that we had a fantastic run of 7 games without defeat in the middle of the season and draw on those performances in the final 3 games if we are to have a strong end to the season. We may be in midtable but we must pick up points against a very strong South Woodford side on Saturday. I am looking to my players to pick themselves up and come back stronger from this defeat, as they have done for me at other times during the season".

As Kay says, Fives travel to promotion chasing South Woodford for a local derby this Saturday, determined to get back on track after a couple of disappointing results.
