Match report Fives won the toss on a blustery day at the Paddock and elected to field first on a wicket which had been covered for some time. In spite of a quick start by the Chelmsford batsmen in the first few overs, some exemplary bowling from Savanhu and Coleman slowed the scoring rate. Coleman also removed both openers in quick succession to further slow the Chelmsford scoring rate. With Fives controlling the game the rain came and after a 20 minute delay play resumed with the Chelmsford batsmen fighting back. An excellent 69 from Dalrymple, helped by some wayward Fives bowling and lacklustre fielding, allowed Chelmsford to get into a strong position with 15 overs of their innings left. Fives skipper Stevens went back to Coleman and Savanhu, his two best bowlers on the day, and their final 13 overs yielded just 44 runs. Because of the rain delay, Fives were not expecting to get too many overs to chase down Chelmsford's 218-8 but they started brightly with both Nick Rotsey, Stevens and Ballard scoring freely but failing to go on to make big scores. At the start of the last hour Fives needed 131 to win but their chase was hampered by the loss of two quick wickets slowed the chase. A fifth wicket partnership of 79 in just 13 overs between the excellent Britton who was eventually out for 49, and Ian Rotsey who made 44 put Fives within touching distance of a deserved victory, only for another flurry of wickets leaving 3 runs needed off the last ball of the game for victory. With the field spread far and wide only two were possibly leaving a scores level draw.
