Chelmsford v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 21 May 2005 at 1.30
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won 5 wickets
Match report
The second eleven took on Chelmsford on Saturday at a wet and windy Chelmer Park. Having won the toss Fives elected to field and the opening bowlers of Hall and Shah got down to business straight away bowling a very consistent line and length. At times Chelmsford's opening batsmen were struggling to get bat on ball such was the accuracy of the opening bowlers. This was assisted with some great ground fielding particularly from James Foley who was having an inspired day in the field. Although we only took a single wicket in the first 30-35 overs the over rate that Fives were bowling was quick and Chelmsford's run rate was slow. The first change of bowling was Josh Peters who bowled very well into what was a vey strong wind and he probably deserved a wicket during his spell. Nevertheless, it was left to the next couple of changes of Palmer and Poulter to reap the rewards of the pressure that had been built from the earlier stages. Palmer who i might add is showing maturity beyond his 16 years clean bowled a couple of their top order batsmen and ended up with very good figures. Having recently returned from a back injury Poulter bowled extremely well getting better as his spell went on, ending up with tidy figures of (9-2-33-3). To emphasize how good the bowling was 6 out of the 8 wickets were clean bowled. It should also be noted that alot of individuals fielding has improved this year; thus helping the bowlers and enhancing the general morale of the team at this early stage of the season.
Chasing Chelmsford's 163-8 (52 overs) our reply could be described as typical Fives. The first hour and a half was faultless, with the impressive Foley (55) and Yallop (70) making an opening partnership of 115. Both of these teenage batsmen showing a range of free flowing shots most of which were predominantly stroked along the floor with the minimum of fuss. However the departure of Foley started a mini-collapse as Fives lost momentum losing 5 wickets in total over the next 15 or so overs. However, we eventually reached Chelmsford's target of 163 to win by 5 wickets with about 8 overs or so to spare.
Man of the Match: TOM YALLOP (In his first match this season showed no rust whatsoever and effortlessly stroked his way to a fine 70)
