Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Colchester on Sat 28 May 2005 at 1.30
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won 2 wickets

Match report Fives battled their way to a third consecutive league win on Saturday at the Paddock, in what was a tight and low scoring game dominated by the ball against Colchester. On a sunny, but slightly blustery afternoon at he Paddock Fives decided to field first. For the second consecutive week Hall & Shah opened the bowling. They were both bowling a penetrating line and length which was causing their batsmen to play one or two uncertain shots in the early stages. This eventually paid dividends as both bowlers got early breakthroughs to get Fives off to another great start. Runs were hard to come by and wickets were falling at regular intervals on a wicket which was proving difficult for the batsmen. Hall ended with splendid figures of 13-4-30-4 to continue his fine start to the season. The first bowling changes saw Pettett and Poulter come on. Once again they settled into a rhythm straight away not allowing the Colchester batsmen to settle. Both finished with fine bowling figures restricting Colchester's run rate and picking up the odd wicket along the way. It was left to 16 year old Josh Peter's to wrap up the tail who finished with 2-8 at the end of Colchester's innings of 141 all out.

Although Colchester's total was a very modest one, chasing their total was never going to be straight forward. Fives probably had about three hours to get it, so it was all about keeping wickets in hand on a pitch which was certainly offering some help to the bowlers. Fives got off to a nervy start losing two quick wickets leaving them on 10-2. None of the top order Fives batsmen managed to dominate once in and Fives were left on 68-6 at one stage with plenty of overs still to bowl. Fives however did have a very strong batting order which batted right the way down to No 11. It was left to two fine promising 16 year olds; Jack Swash and Adrian 'Tino' Palmer to tranform the game and bat very maturly under the circumstances. Their contribution was crucial and although Tino was Ct & Bowled for a fine 32, Jack Swash (35no) saw the team home along with help from Peters and Hall near the end to see Fives scrape home by 2 wickets; thus maintaining their 100% record and topping the table at this very early stage of the season.

Man of the Match: Andy Hall (a great opening spell of 13-4-30-4 and helping Jack Swash see the team home at the end)
