Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Saffron Walden on Sat 04 Jun 2005 at 1.30
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won Fives won by 5 wickets

Match report Fives beat Saffron Walden by 5 wickets on Saturday at a wind swept Paddock, in a game which was in most parts pretty much dominated by Fives. Having won the toss Fives took to the field and once again the bowling combination of Hall and Shah found a consistent line and length which was backed up by some eager Fives ground fielding which restricted the opening Saffron batsmen in the early stages. There was a very short boundary on one side of the wicket so there was no margin for error for any of the bowlers, so it was credit to the opening pair that they bowled accurately restricting Saffron to 60 runs of the first 20 overs or so. The slow run rate and good ground fielding was putting pressure on the rest of the Saffron team. Although wickets were not falling, the good track and short boundary were probably not being taken advantage of often enough by the Saffron batsmen. Andy Hall bowled continually for 20 overs and finished with tidy figures once again. The other three bowlers of Pettett (2-26), Harding(2-42) & Poulter(2-30) all bowled steady enough at a crucial part of the innings where Saffron's batsmen were looking to get a score of 250. Fives stuck to their task fairly well to restrict Saffron to 225-9 dec.

In reply it was all about the openers as Neil Braithwaite (97) and James Foley (98) dominated right from the off with an array of fluent attacking strokes to all parts of the ground. Both batted sensibly and were a joy to watch putting on 188 for the first wicket. The heroric Braithwaite who battled through severe cramp and refused a runner, just missed out on a superb ton when he was caught on the boundary. Foley was dismissed in similar fashion to Bratihwaite, getting caught rather controversially on the boundary for a fine 98. Although there were a few scares with the loss of three quick wickets, Fives cruised home with over 5 overs left to win their 4th league game on the trot thus maintaining their 100% record.

Man of the Match: Neil Braithwaite & James Foley (Both produced fantastic match winning knocks)
