Match report Fives & Heronians 100% winning record came to a sudden end against local rivals Wanstead on Saturday, with a crushing 118 run loss. In an entertaing game with both sides having the upper hand at various stages during the game, it was the Fives batting that let them down when chasing 228 to win. Fives won the toss and elected to field and a great spell of bowling from Dominic Addison (14-1-51-5) helped keep Fives on top during the early exchanges. Wanstead were on 70-5 with a number of their key batsmen already in the Pavillion. Credit to the Wanstead batsmen who dug deep and a quick partnership of over 120 in less than 20 overs saw the game swing their way. However a late surge from Fives which saw Mark Wheeler grab three wickets restricted Wanstead to 228 all out, when they looked like getting nearer 300 at one stage.

In reply Fives lost the key wicket of Braithwaite in the first over, but at one stage Fives looked set on 80-2 with at least 1hour and 45mins to bat. Adrian Palmer(42) was batting well and Fives were well up with the run rate. However, a number of loose shots and tight bowling from Wanstead helped them claw thier way back into the match. Fives had no real reply and were eventually all out for 110 with the last hour still to go to lose by a margin of 118 runs.

Although a slight setback, four wins out of 5 is not a bad return for the start of the season. Wanstead deserved to win and this game proved that league positions count for nothing in what is a very even and tough league.
