Gidea Park & Romford v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 02 Jul 2005 at 1.30
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won 18 runs

Match report Fives won by the tight margin of 18 runs with two overs left in an entertaining game against Gidea Park on Saturday. Gidea Park won the toss and elected to bowl on a pitch which certainly offered a little assistance to the Gidea Park opening bowlers. So it was credit to the Fives openers of Brathwaite and Iqbal who saw the new ball off playing very steady and sensibly, whilst scoring at a reasonable rate to get Fives of to a solid start. They put on 72 for the first wicket until Iqbal departed for 28. Palmer came to the wicket and also batted very sensibly to build another useful partnership with Brathwaite to lay the platform for the rest of the team. There were fine knocks once again from Brathwaite (68) who is having another consistent season with the bat and Adrian `Tino' Palmer(52) who is improving all the time. There were also little cameos from Jack Swash, Rana Shahbaz and Russell Beckett to take Fives past the 200 mark and to gain maximum batting points. This enabled the Fives to reach a very good total of 242-7dec.

Gidea Park's reply showed how cricketing fortunes can swing from one way to another. Fives began very well with Chris White and the returning Dominic Addison causing all sorts of problems to the GPR openers. Fives were on top with both bowlers taking 2 wickets apiece with some fine bowling and smart catching. This left GPR on about 40-4. However the game swung for GPR with a fine couple of partnerships for them and Fives had no real answers and it looked like GPR were in pole position to win with 5 wickets needing 40 to win at a rate of less than 6 an over. However the retun of a fired up Chris`Chalky' White swung the game Fives way with the dismissal of their big hitter. The return of Addison for a second spell saw Fives nick a few more crucial wickets. GPR now needed 20 off the last three overs with the last pair. Russell Beckett kept his nerves under a skier to take the winning catch giving Addison his 5th wicket. This meant Fives had won by 18 runs to record their 6th win out of 8 games and probably their most hard fought.

Everyone contributed to a fine win and credit to all the Fives players. There were four 16 year olds and a 17yo playing for Fives showing a good nucleus of young players are coming through. They all fought hard as part of the team and it was nice to get the twenty points in a game that GPR could easily of won in what was an enthralling encounter.

Man of the Match: Dominic Addison 15.5-2-46-5
This was a close contest, but credit should be given to Chalky White who got 4 wickets including the crucial breakthrough near the end. Also to Braths, who saw the new ball out to finish on 68 to record his 3rd 50 in 6 games. Also to Tino who made a splendid 52 and duly celebrated by downing a pint of lager in a new Fives record of 10.60 seconds cheered on by a mixture of the seconds/thirds players chanting `Tino',`Tino' to round of a successful day.
