Hadleigh & Thundersley v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI on Sat 14 May 2005 at 1.30
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won 7 wickets
Match report
Due to the frustrated career aspirations of the elected skipper, vice captain Clive Franklin was thrust in to the lime light for the first league match of the season. It was clear from the start of the match that this was going to be a Saturday afternoon with a difference.
Having lost the toss on a cold windy afternoon, H&T elected to bat first on a wicket that looked dry and an ideal track for batsman who could play their shots. At 40 for no wicket after 7 overs after some indifferent opening overs, F&H had clearly started the season where they left off. The introduction of Derek Maddison (4-26) in to the attack who proceeded to bowl 5 consecutive maiden overs, restored some order to the proceedings. It was the further introduction of Ritchie Charlton (3-29) in to the attack with haircut, that induced a mini-collapse. His wickets included a good catch standing up by the skipper followed by a sharp stumping. Some effective hitting by the H&T middle order meant that F&H could have been chasing 175+ but a great catch by John Walters on the boundary turned the game dramatically. Derek the mopped up the tail with two Ct & B leaving the 4s with 130 to chase. A good allround performance in the field. Well done lads.
In reply, H&T bowled tightly from the word go and kept the pressure on whilst the new ball moved around. At 35-3 F&H knew that they were in for a battle. Steve Greene (40*) and Adam Peters (40*) viewed things differently. They saw off the opening bowlers and the new ball before taking the game to the rest of the attack. The steady accumulation of singles followed by some positive hitting in the end meant that we ended up winning with 18 overs to spare.
An excellent start to the campaign with everyone making a positive contribution. The skipper was particularly pleased as the majority of decisions in the field had paid off e.g. bowling changes, fielding changes.
