Match report
Fives won the toss and batted first on an overcast day. Steady accelleration after a slow start took us to 119-0 at the half way point which should have been a platform for the par total of 270 on a track with two short boundaries. The departure of Hamaad for a cultured 51 led to a period of 5 overs when only 9 runs were scored and it took the arrival of Kula to enliven Stan's marathon 90 from146 balls, the last part of which reuired a runner due to severe cramp in one calf. There was a bright last over as the unleashed Raggie smacked 12 from 5 balls taking us to 244-5. Raggie and Hamaad got the new ball to swing but withourt the required control to create pressure and 35 came from the first 5 overs. Mark Speller suffered a recurramce of the Yips and will be back to the nets to have his action reviewed by the coach. Lew Forman started well but suffered at the hands of big Phil Murdoch who took full advatage of the short boundaries to post 67 fdrom 59 balls despite very defensive field settings. Maddo was his usual dependable self and was unlucky to have a stumping and catch missed but at no time did Fives exert enough pressure, allowing Basildon and Pitsea to cruise home with 4 overs to spare. A significant point is that we conceded 25 wides and no balls - worth four overs. On the plus side, the fielding held up well under the pressure with Hmaad Sayyed, Raggie, Lew Forman and Mark Speller being outstanding.
