Old Parkonians v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 4th XI on Sat 13 Aug 2005 at 1.30
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won 4 wkts (2 really!)
Match report
A combination of very late cry-offs, disappearing transport and other mysteries meant Fives only had 8 players. Mark Hutchinson's dad was unlucky enough to be on hand and agreed to field as sub for a few overs until missing persons appeared. As it was, he took a full part in the game including fielding in steady rain for an hour. Matt, we salute you!! Thus began the tale of the Old Parks 8+1 match.....
Parks won the toss and batted on a low slow pitch with a very fast outfield. Mark began with his usual accuracy conceding only 6 off his first five overs. At the other end Tony Tecce, following an innovative first over, the highlight of which was a beamer at second slip, settled down to bowl fast and well, beating the bat on numerous occasions. There were good spells also from Graham Sibley and Uncle Yaseem but the surprise package was new prospective member Amjad Mahmood who purveyed 17 overs of good legspin, most of which were bowled with a very wet ball. Before the rain he had bowled 7 overs one for 14, a top effort with 8 + 1 fielders. With the rain intensifying, Old Parks skipper, umpiring at the time and thoroughly soaked, declared on 180-2 off 49 overs clearly expecting not to get out onto the field again. Fortunately the weather cleared during tea and only 10 minutes were lost.
Despite the early loss of Tony Teece, Fives moved serenely to 75 in the 14th over with Uncle Yaseem collecting a classy 37 off 36 balls. The fall of two quick wickets meant that 106 were needed with only 5 wickets in hand, one of whom had not batted for 25 years! A good stand of 90 in 15 overs between the skipper and Graham took Fives tantalisingly close but when both were out in successive overs and Mark succumbed to a fast yorker, 13 were needed form the last proper pair, all due respect to Matt, equipped with borrowed gear and promising to "run away if that fast bloke bowled at his body." After four tense maidens with the score on 168 the tension was lifted when the hitherto cautious Amjad hoisted a perfectly good ball over square leg for 6. In the next over Tim uppercut a fast ball for a third man four to secure a tense win and keep Fives in the a faint chance of promotion.
