Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Sunday Cup XI v Robinson Lakeside on Sun 17 Jul 2005 at 2.00
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won won by 28 runs
Match report
Having had the pleasure of seeing their skipper call incorrectly, Fives opted to have a bat on a customary 'shers road' in hot and humid conditions. James Swash in his first game for the club since returning from Australia, 'clubbed' 66 in no time and after 18 overs Fives were on 130. However we had lost 6 wickets, including a Golden Duck for Petrol, who had the misfortune of tickling one off his legs to the keeper to the delight of the oppositions 'calypso posse'. It was therefore left to James Lawes (66) and Gordon Whorlow (96) batting at number 8, to steady the flow of wickets, whilst continuing with the 7 plus an over run rate. Both batsmen played sensibly and picked off the bad balls with consumate ease assisted by some very 'gentle' fielding from the oppostion - to the horror of the heckling calpyso posse - 'stop da ball man'. The noise been generated in front of the pavilion caused Len and Arthur to re-locate from their customary position, to a 'quieter' spot round near the sightscreeen. It was left to Ed Murphy and Nick Rotsey (19 in 5 balls) to draw the innings to a close at 329-9 off our alloted 40 overs. (Porks, unfortunately, due to a limited ball supply you had to bat at 10 this week - thanks TB for not playing)
After seeing the empty beer glasses lined up at the bar during tea and with bomer slurring his words, whilst struggling to walk in a straight line, I took the field with trepedation fearing the abuse that would come my way if we had lost with 329 on the board. The first 10 overs saw the oppo reach 72 - 2 - a wicket apiece for Ed Murphy and Nick 'porky' Rotsey, with the captain setting very attacking fields - 3 slips,a gully, and no mid-off or third man was the norm. However, due to a 'game over' syndrome creeping into some players mindset we then proceeded to take our foot of the pedal with some very gentle bowling - particular mention to gully for his 11 ball over with 22 runs conceded - I must also hold my hands up and admit further intoxicating bomer with a vodka and orange at drinks probably wasnt clever on my part. We had, however, achieved one objective of keeping the now growing crowd interested in the outcome of the game, as 140 were required off the last 12 overs with number 3 and 4 batsmen well set. However, some inspired bowling changes did the trick, with Gordrick reverting to his slow/medium pacers, proceeded by the returning porks with his left arm in duckers and the skipper bringing himself on to send down a mixture of yorkers, beamers, long hops and unplayable deliveries. With 45 needed of the last 3 overs, Robinson Lakeside tried unsuccessfully to launch 'da ball to all parts man' still being egged on by a partizan calypso crowd but ended up 28 runs short - A thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all with the oppostion drinking at the Paddock until 9.30pm.
Man of the Match Award - A close call with James Swash (very good all round keeping display together with his 66) and James Lawes (66) just being pipped by Gordrick - for his effortless batting and tidy bowling.
Roll on the Sunday A bandwagon - home to Southgate next week fellas where a sterner test will await!
