Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Colchester on Sat 24 Jun 2006 at 1.30

Match report
Fives lost the toss against Colchester - who were surprising early season strugglers along with ourselves.
Dan & Gary put on 42 for the first wicket. Dans dismissal lead to mini collapse as Braths & Nick Rotsey both followed in quick succession
Against a decent bowling attack, chalks & sheeny weathered the storm, quite happy to play out a few maidens with chalky getting the pace and measure of the wicket with sheeny quite happy to drop anchor for the side.
After 31 overs, the score stood at 88 for three (where 275 was probably a good score). However, the careful and watchful batting of sheeny and Chalks allowed for an acceleration in the last 20 overs. Chalks played some exquisite shots in compiling a 54 ball 41.
Ben Britton & TB came in and played aggressively around Gary for quick cameos of 22 and 19 respectively. Despite a late clatter of wickets, we posted 248 for 9 off our 52 overs, which by no means a match winning total was a decent competitive score and ensured 8 points had been guaranteed.
We took the field with an under pressure Tom Clark and Chris White opening up. Both bolwed ok, wuith Tom looking the more likely to take the wicket of Colchester key batsmen Julian Russell.
However it took the introduction of Fives stalwart Terry Ballard to make the first breakthrough well held by Dan at point.
Josh came on to replace TC but struggled with his line, length and run up, he eventually broke down with shin splints after his second over. Therefore the usual seam attack was now missing JK (shagging up North) and JP (crocked) and the Fives boys were one light on the field.
However of more pressing concern was a weakened bowling attack, relying on TC & Chalks
What came next was arguably the best spell of seam bowling form Tom Clark since he has been at Fives. He ran in for 12 overs beating the bat regularly and bowling with good pace.
Colchester despite only needing around 80 off the last 14 overs with wickets in hand had no answer to the determined and disciplined bowling from Chalks and TC. They were left needing 14 off the last over and despite TC momentarily loosing the plot in the last over they need 3 off the last ball but TC managed to bowl 2 dot balls.
This was a magnificent team display with everyone giveing 100% and showing a team spirit and and hseer will power to overcome a good Ccolchester side when we missing key bowlers and fielding with only 10.5 players.
