Upminster v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 08 Jul 2006 at 1.30
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won Won by 132 Runs
Match report
Fives lost the toss and were asked to bat on a road with a very short boundary on the far side of the ground.
We raced to 43 off 7 overs before Dan maybe could have played a different shot but responsibility falls with the team not just Dan. However, this bought Phil Apps to the wicket and he and sheeny proceeded to put on a partnership of 156 runs.
Phil for someone making his first team debut showed exquisite timing, running between the wickets and ability to block a good ball were characteristics of what was an absolutely superb innings.
At the other end sheeny remained calm as his manner, playing some exquisite shots through the covers whilst keeping the scoreboard ticking along at a very healthy rate.
The second wicket fell at 195 after 34 overs - sheeny departing for a very useful 72. This bought TB to the wicket, who after a couple of early forward defences then blazed the ball to any which part of the ground he fancied (usually the place where he had to run least which makes sense). Despite loosing Phil for an excellent 72, chris white joined tb and together they played very well in taking the game away from Upminster - who were ragged at times in the field. TB departed for a bludgeoned 75.
A late cameo from the Ben allowed Fives to declare on 326 for 4 off 51.4 overs - not allowing Upminster to get the extra bowling point - shrewd captaincy on TB behalf.
After experiencing a very good tea (unlike at Chelmer Park), the Fives boys took the field, knowing that there was never gonna be a better opportunity to gain our first win of the season.
After TC dropped danger man Arshad Ali - caught & bowled first ball of the innings heads could have dropped. However, over the last 5 weeks the Fives boys to a man are 11 guys who stick together so this was not going to deter us from gaining our first win.
In TC second over, Arshad Ali slashed at one outside off stump, and the catch was taken by Russell Beckett at 3rd man.
An out of sorts Jk (despite trying to impress Samantha who was slowly beginning to get more pissed) was withdrawn from the attack and replaced by Chris White. Chalky bowled 3 maidens in his first 3 overs and was eventually rewarded with a couple of wickets.
He showed the adage of bowling a good line and length and bowling straight -
At 125 for 6 off 30 overs, with 20 overs called Fives need to to take the last 4 wickets and duly did. JK returned to the fold (perhaps aware that his g/f eye was beginning to wander in the direction of another one of our lads who shall remain nameless ha ha ) and blew away Upminsters tail with them still having 11 overs to bat.
This was a much deserved win and was due reward for all the effort the lads have put in over the last 5 weeks
