Colchester v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 12 Aug 2006 at 1.30
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Lost 6 wickets

Match report Fives were confronted with a hard green deck at Castle Arms Park on Saturday and the threat of rain all afternoon. With this in mind we batted upon winning the toss in the hope of ensuring 8 points before the rain washed the game out.

Soon after the start the rain came and the wickets fell. At 28-3 we were struggling, however, the talented Yallop scored a stylish 21 including one massive 6, flicked off his legs. When he was out playing on at 57-4 Colchester were looking at rolling Fives for around 100 and knocking it off. Some stout resiliance came from the Fives middle order though with Chalky White hanging around for 46 balls and the two mainstays of the innings Nick Rotsey and Ben Britton scoring 49 and 61 respectively. with a couple of useful contributions from the tail Fives mustered 203-10 from their 52 overs. First objective achieved.

Early wickets were going to be the key if Fives were to pull off a win against the in form team in Div 1 and first ball Clarky removed their opening batsman caught behind. Fives were then made to wait for the next wicket as McQueen and M. Austin put together a partnership. The rain soon came though and although everyone tried their best to play through it, the rain got the better of us and the covers were called for.

Play eventually resumed for the last hour with Colchester requiring 160. Fives made the decision to cut down their run-ups and take some pace off the ball and to concentrate on bowling it in the right areas and getting through the overs to ensure 25 were bowled and so the match would be called a draw, not abandoned.

Although Colchester lost a wicket after 3 overs of the last twenty, they batted very well mixing big hits with nudges for ones and twos. Four different bowlers were used, however, no one managed to contain the batsman even though Colchester lost a couple more wickets in the chase. Eventually Colchester won with four balls to spare by 6 wickets.

On a day were most other matches were abandoned (each team getting 4 points) this, although it was a loss, did a great deal of help towards the fight for survival with Fives gaining 9 points and making up some lost ground on other teams.
