Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Chelmsford on Sat 19 Aug 2006 at 1.00
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won 8 wickets
Match report
After a wet week the covers were removed to reveal a juicy wicket that had the bowlers salivating, but not leaving the bowlers without hope as it was typically flat. With overcast conditions Fives won the toss and didn't hesitate in asking Chelmsford to bat.
This decision was justified immediately when the first ball fizzed past the batsmans head from just back of a length, prompting a call for the short leg kit. Soon enough this paid dividends with a simple bat-pad to leave the oppo 9-1 off 5 overs.
A promising partnership followed and after a solid opening spell from Clarky, Chris White was brought into the attack. Starting slowly, the captain went slightly more defensive taking all the slips out. This seemed to upset Chalky a bit as he steamed in and took 3 wickets in four overs. One clean bowling their best batsman, beating him for pace and another from a superb one handed catch in the slips from Dan Stevens.
Meanwhile JK continued his impressive bowling hitting good areas consistently and deserved more than one wicket from his 12 over spell.
After drinks it became clear both Chalky and JK were nearing the end of their spells and TB and TC were brought into the attack. Clarky duly cleaned up the tail with 3 wickets and Terry picked up one for himself in a very economical spell.
This left Chelmsford all out for 115 and with the track calmed down Fives went in very happily to another superb tea by Kaye
Fives usual opening partnership of Dan Stevens and GaryEdwards opened up and got fives off to a good start, against the old ball. Dan playing fluently as ever and Sheeny playing solid up the other end. Unfortunately for the second time this year against Chelmsford Dan was run out having scored a very good 43.
Tom Yallop then came to the crease and departed soon after for 5 bringing Nick Rotsey in. This was probably the time to take the new ball, however, they did not and the two batsmen consolidated for five or so overs before looking to finish the game. This was duly done once the new ball was taken and the boundaries soon started to flow, although not all off the middle of the bat prompting one of the batsmen to be called a Polo - all edges and no middle. However, this did not deter him from his task and the game was finished in style with a four in the 29th over.
