Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Hutton on Sat 23 Apr 2011 at 1.00 pm
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won By 27 runs
Match report
Fives and Heronians kicked-off the 2011 season with a 27 run win over Hutton at The Paddock in round one of the SNEL League Cup.
In a competition restructured to 40 overs-a-side and a new orange cricket ball used per innings, Fives batted first on a gorgeous April afternoon bathed in warm sunshine and made a bright start to the campaign.
Ed Buxton and Gary Edwards shared an opening stand of 90 inside 13 overs before Edwards pushed a return catch to Jon Hammond to depart for a breezy 40 off 44 balls which included 7 boundaries.
Neil Brathwaite drove his 3rd ball for 4 before being bowled through the gate and Phil Apps hit 12 before he too was castled as Hammond collected his 2nd wicket in returning figures of 8-1-33-2.
At 117-3 inside the 19th over, Ben Britton and Buxton got together to rebuild the innings firstly with some quick running and nudging of the ball into the gaps (Britton executing three late-cuts for four) and then some big hitting as both batters struck straight sixes.
Having moved passed a sweet 50 and onto 90, Buxton sliced a drive to backward point to be caught for a knock containing 14 fours and a six and lasting just 89 deliveries.
Britton fell soon after at 213-5 in the 33rd over for 47 off 40 balls (6x4, 1x6) before a rollicking partnership between Terry Ballard and Nick Rotsey pushed Fives up to a commanding total over 300.
The pair added 72 in only 37 balls to take the game away from Hutton as both stuck some meaty blows with one Rotsey straight six clearing the ground into Green Lane.
Rotsey was bowled with just 7 balls of the innings remaining for 35 off 18 balls (5x4, 1x6) but there was enough time for incoming batter Stuart Knapman to crack a mammoth six himself before Ballard finished the innings by heaving the final ball out of the ground and into the adjoining fields as the last over bowled by Patterson yielded 23 runs and propelled the hosts up to 309-7 off 40 overs - Ballard finishing unbeaten on 47 off only 27 balls faced with 3 maximums and 5 boundary fours.
If Fives thought their former division one visitors would roll down after relegation last season they were wrong as opening pair Nick Vanner and O'Dell smacked 87 inside 15 overs before Nick Rotsey put on the brakes and had O'Dell stumped down the leg-side off a wide to a superb piece of wicket-keeping from Ben Britton.
But that only brought out Matt Haigh who added a further 80 with Vanner and at 167-1 inside 26 overs Hutton were well placed to make a push for victory.
Steve Doig broke the 2nd wicket partnership bowling Vanner for 74 scored off 77 balls then a sharp throw from Gary Edwards saw Feeley run out for 14 at 185-3 after 29 overs.
Hutton captain Bobby Bull continued the charge smacking two sixes off Doig but Buxton bowled him soon for 23 and when captain Johnny Kay returned to have Haigh well caught to a skier at mid-on from Brathwaite for 66 the game was almost up for Hutton at 236-5 with 74 required off 42 balls.
Stuart Knapman bowled a tight spell and collected two wickets to keep the visitors at bay as they finished their 40 overs at 282-7 to give Fives a 27 run win.
The pick of the bowlers Knapman (2-53 in 7 overs) and Rotsey (1-53 in 8 overs) kept Hutton in check at crucial periods on superb batting strip.
The reward for victory is another home clash next Saturday in round 2 to Westcliff-on-Sea who along with Hutton were also relegated from division one last term - the winner of this will visit Chelmsford or Brentwood in the quarter-final.
