Harlow v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Midweek on Wed 01 Jun 2011 at 6.00 pm
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won By 7 Wickets
Match report
Fives and Heronians made a winning start to their SNEL T20 group F campaign with a comfortable 7 wicket win at Harlow on Wednesday evening.
Stand-in skipper Ed Buxton lost the toss but wasn’t too fussed at having to field first – although when opposing number Luke Heskett and Rehman Ahmed were scoring freely at the start of the Harlow innings he might have felt differently.
Harlow indeed raced to 60-0 off 7 overs with Heskett clubbing two sixes off Buxton but young Jake Poulter in his second over then removed Ahmed and Kulasena to excellent catches in the deep by Sam Adcock and Ben Britton to put the skates on the Harlow innings and turn the tide in Fives favour.
Ahmed played what appeared to be a flowing cover drive only to pick out Sam Adcock sweeping on the boundary for 27 and to his first ball Kulasena recklessly hacked to long-off where Britton held on well.
In his next over Poulter induced a thin tickle off Calvino’s bat and Gary Norris standing-up took a fine catch to leave Harlow 70-3 off 10 overs.
Slow left-arm spinner Phil Apps was then brought into the attack at the pavilion end and bamboozled all before him as he removed the danger man and Harlow top scorer Luke Heskett for 34 as he charged and was stumped by Norris and collected two further wickets as he bowled former Essex staffer Andrew McGarry for 8 and held onto a superb low return catch to remove Ramsay for 9 as the hosts limped to 109-7 with 3 overs remaining in the innings.
Javaid and Buxton returned to the attack at the death to collect 3 wickets – all cleaned bowled - with Javaid taking two wickets in the last over of the innings at a cost of just one run as Harlow completed their 20 overs on 122-9.
The standout bowlers Poulter took 3-15 off 4 overs, Apps 3-23 off his four and Javaid 2-18.
Buxton and Neil Brathwaite started the Fives reply in similar fashion to Harlow moving comfortably to 67 inside the 10th over but pace off the ball was a vital part in the match as leggie Jack Davies had Brathwaite well caught on the deep square-leg boundary by Webb for 10.
In his next over Buxton hit a full toss straight in the air and Webb ran in from deep square to hold onto another excellent catch as the skipper departed for a 47 ball 48 which included 2 sixes and 6 fours to leave his side 84-2 off 12 overs.
Davies completed his 4 overs with 2-28 but the damaged had already been done and despite taking a superb catch of his own at cover point to help Matthew Heskett dismiss Apps for 10, Britton (16 not out off 13 balls) and Norris (6 not out) knocked off the remaining runs as Fives won with 22 balls to spare by 7 wickets.
A good start to take the maximum 2 points – next up Ongar visit The Paddock on Sunday (5th June) for the second group F match starting at 2pm.
