Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Saffron Walden on Sat 03 Jun 2006 at 1.30
Match was Drawn

Match report Fives battled hard to earn a draw against Saffron Walden on Saturday. Fives to their credit did well considering a few inexperienced players were drafted in a few hours before the game was due to begin. All eleven players showed great spirit and determination to compete in a match which Saffron looked odds-on to win for most of it. Having won the toss Fives decided to make use of the hot conditions and bat first. Fives got of to rather a slow start and found it hard going early on. Phillip Apps made a steady 33, but none of the top order made any real impact, with Beckett again falling victim to the curse of his family just arriving to watch him bat and then getting out. James Lawes was the man to rescue Fives continuing his good early season form(on the field). He was ably supported by Keith Oram at the closing stages of Fives innings to enable Fives to have a fighting chance in this game. Fives total of 195-9 was a below avearge total on a ground or pitch which usually requires 250+ batting first.

In reply all of Fives bowlers bowled steady enough with perhaps not the luck they deserved. After a year of hinting to the skipper of his capability with the ball the boy Beckett was unleished and he probably ended up being the pick of the bowlers under the circumstances taking a couple of prize scalps. Saffron looked on course for a comfortable victory at about 120-1 needing about 4/5 an over to win. However Fives dug deep and everyone went up a level in the field to slowly drag themselves back in the game and the possibility of avoiding defeat and at least drawing the game. In what was a great game of cricket Saffron needed 4 of the final over with 5 wickets in hand. The last over was superbly bowled by Reggie Coleman who under pressure managed a wicket maiden to give Fives the draw they deserved.
