Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Loughton on Sat 08 Jul 2006 at 1.30

Match report
Fives narrowly missed out on earning themselves a hard fought win and 20 points against Loughton in what was a keenly fought contest at the Paddock. Having lost the toss Fives were asked to bat first and got off to a steady start after the early loss of Kerr who was unluckily stumped early on. The ever improving Ricky Reynolds anchored the innings (102) with a fine display which was ably supported by Zain Iqbal (59). The pair put on 125 for the second wicket to give Fives the platform for a big total. After the dismissal of Zain, the run rate slowed a little for a ten over period or so. However Fives were not losing wickets and this enabled Fives to press on in the few remaining overs with Shoab Iqbal (58*) and James Lawes (27) making useful contributions at the end to leave Fives on 274-4 dec from 52 overs.
Although this was a good total, Loughton had bowled their overs quickly and they had a few danger men within their batting line-up which included a couple of ex-Fives players Asif Khan and Graham Watson. To our credit Fives bowled and fielded with a great deal of determination and spirit to make it a close contest. It was nip and tuck all the way as our chances of winning mainly depended on getting Khan out. Rehan Iqbal again bowled well with the new ball. Although Fives ground fielding was great their catching was not so good. The side managed to spill 5 catches, 3 from the bowling of Dan Platt, who again showed that he is getting better each week. It looked like this was going to come back to haunt the team. However the return of Mark Wheeler (5-60) to the side seemed to make a huge difference to the game plan as he managed to stem the run flow and create the pressure which allowed Fives pick up wickets at regular intervals late on to leave Fives on the brink of victory. However the last pair for Loughton stood firm to bat out the last three overs to end the match as a draw (241-9)
Fives were able to take 12 points from the game to get themselves of the bottom of the league at the halfway stage. The team can take alot of positives out of this performance, particulary as for most of the season it's been a very inexperienced team with half the players being teenagers. If the team shows the same fight and determination as they showed in this game there is no reason why Fives can't themselves out of trouble and start to get up the table.
