Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Colchester on Sat 12 Aug 2006 at 1.30
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won 4 wickets

Match report Fives gained a much needed and morale boosting win against Colchester on Saturday, to keep alive their chances of avoiding relegation. Conditions were not ideal with a damp outfield and wet ball, but Fives managed to bowl and field very well after Colchester won the toss and elected to bat first. Rehan Iqbal took the new ball along with Shoab Iqbal and both performed extremely well. Shoab Iqbal took most of the plaudits with fine figures in a very lengthy spell (21.4-2-82-5). However, he was also backed up by young Rehan (12-1-34-2) who is having a fantastic season in his first year bowling at this level as a 15 year old. Tom Kerr also bowled well to take a couple of scalps late on. Credit must be given to the team as a whole for the outstanding fielding display of catching and ground fielding which gave the team a huge lift and also helped the bowlers. Colchester eventually made 177 all out, to leave Fives needing 178 with alot of time in which to get them.

The top order made a positive start, but this chase was always going to be about wickets lost rather than struggling with the run rate. Most of the top order got good starts, but then got out when they were well set. However it was left to the in form man Adrian Palmer (75) to calm any team nerves (Neary in particular) to see Fives edge closer to their target. Tino Palmer is having a remarkable season with the bat considering he has only played roughly a third of the games this year. As he pointed out in the bar he has almost 350 from 5 innings with an average of almost 70 odd (i think), not bad for a hockey player. It was left to Rehan Iqbal to hit the winning run to see Fives home by 4 wickets with plenty of overs to spare.

With only 4 games to go Fives are still rooted to the bottom of the table, 11 pts behind Hornchurch in 9th and 12 pts behind Saffron in 8th. However, if they can perform like they did in this match it will give them every chance of survival in the Premier League and avoiding the drop.
