Loughton v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Midweek on Wed 29 Jun 2011 at 6.00 pm
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won By 42 Runs
Match report
Fives and Heronians collected their second Dukes Essex T20 group F win in as many games with a comprehensive 42 run win at local rivals Loughton on Wednesday evening.
Jonny Kay won the toss and elected to bat first on a wicket that was cut just before the game commenced and Fives with just nine men at the ground due to traffic delays.
Terry Ballard and Ed Buxton opened up and laid the foundations with a superb first wicket partnership of 110 in 64 balls – both players gelled well together as Buxton pushed quick singles to allow Ballard to plunder 52 of his runs in boundaries.
The carnage started in just the second over as Buxton wonderfully drove Naveed through the covers before Ballard brilliantly pulled into the trees over the long deep mid-wicket boundary at the high road end for the first maximum of the evening.
Stuart Greenhill bowled a tight opening two overs for just 11 runs but the boundaries continued to flow as Ballard launched sixes off spinners Butt and Abbass into Traps Hill and the building site at opposite end which required new balls as 62 runs accrued from the 6 overs of powerplay.
Fives kept up the 10-an-over rate throughout the innings as Loughton skipper Usman Jan mixed his bowlers without little success.
Jan brought himself on at the Traps Hill end but he too was powerless to prevent the scoring as another Ballard four saw him reach his fifty in just 25 deliveries and then Buxton joined in the fun by pulling over the scoreboard into the road hitting a parked van in the process.
Buxton reached 36 off 30 balls (4x4, 1x6) until the return of Greenhill saw the first wicket of the evening fall as Buxton was caught by Butt in the 11th over.
Having reached 75 off just 39 balls (7x4, 4x6) Ballard was out in the next over as Michael Gymer got through the defences to leave Fives 120-2 after 12 overs.
Loughton appeared to have bowled themselves back in the match as Gymer and Greenhill continued to impress with both taking 1-26 from their four overs.
Neil Brathwaite and Ben Britton batted sensibly after the opening launch pad as they kept the scoreboard ticking with singles and saw off the remaining overs from Gymer and Greenhill at 151-2 after 16 overs.
Jan turned to his spinners to finish off the innings but this was the perfect scenario for Britton as he hit four mammoth sixes before falling on the long-on boundary attempting a fifth for a stunning 21 ball 40.
Brathwaite and Phil Apps added a further 25 runs in the remaining 15 balls as Fives closed their 20 overs on an outstanding 210-3 – Brathwaite finishing unbeaten on a classy 40 off 28 balls (2x4, 1x6) and Apps 4 not out.
Ryan Cunningham opened the Loughton reply and claimed a wicket to the last ball of the first over as Shah pulled hard to Rahul Bhome who took a fantastic catch behind his body at square leg and another in his next over as he bowled Michael Gymer with the quicker ball to leave the hosts 25-2 off 3 overs.
Bhome then entered the attack to claim the next two wickets as Naveed skied and Ballard held on well at mid-on before he yorked Jan for just 8 as Loughton fell to 61-4 off 8 overs.
Butt and Greenhill then combined to add 67 for the fifth wicket with some hard hitting. The partnership could well have been broken on just 20 as Butt appeared out to a stunning one-handed catch falling backwards by Kay on the long-off boundary when on 35, however, the delivery sent down by Bilal Ashfaq was over waist height and Butt made the most of his no-ball reprieve to hit 68 off 37 balls (6x4, 4x6).
Greenhill himself hit two sixes and a four in 37 from 27 until he attempted another straight driven six off Knapman into Traps Hill but this time he didn’t quite make the perfect connection and Buxton held on nicely to break the stand and leave Loughton 127-5 inside the 15th over.
Having crossed, Butt then launched two sixes in the same Knapman over to keep Loughton interested with 69 still required off 30 balls but Ashfaq returned to gain revenge as Kay took another fine catch on the long-off boundary to dismiss Butt and all but end the home sides hopes at 144-6.
Ashfaq then bamboozled the Loughton lower order as he went on to claim a further three wickets in his next 8 balls as Abbass, Dalton and Tavarasa all swung in vain with Britton, Ballard and Kay taking excellent skied catches.
Cunningham came back on at the Traps Hill end to finish the game as Conor Heaven was stumped by Garry Norris and Loughton 168 all out after 18.4 overs giving Fives a superb 42 run victory.
Ashfaq collected 4-36 from four overs, Cunningham 3-22 from 3.4 and Bhome 2-17 from three.
Kay’s men produced an exemplary performance in all departments with a stunning power batting display, excellent ground and out fielding and tight bowling as the Fives three varied spinners performed to plan.
The result leaves Fives top of the group and a win against Epping next Wednesday at The Paddock in their final group game will see Jonny Kay’s men progress to the quarter-final of the competition and a home tie against the defending champions South Woodford.
