Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Sunday Club XI v Presidents Day on Sun 06 Aug 2006 at

Match report The Game.
The President’s Day fixture was played on a warm and sunny August afternoon. The ground was in immaculate condition and was a tribute to the hard work put in by groundsman Peter Sherwood. The club side was very strong whilst the President’s XI included guests from Wanstead, Woodford Wells, Roding Valley and Navestock cricket clubs plus previous and current club members.

The Club, batting first, and got off to a flying start with 51 runs coming from the first 5 overs but then Steve Gawlor, ably supported by excellent catches in the slip area, struck with 3 quick wickets. The club recovered with a good partnership between Gordon Whorlow and Nick Rotsey before Gordon was out for a good 48. Nick Rotsey then tore into the tiring bowling bringing up his century in 74 balls, with many shots directly from the Rotsey ranch, before retiring.
In the remaining overs Russell Becket (30 not out) and Graham Neary (25 not out from 22 balls!) took the score to a formidable 265 for 6 at tea.

At the discretion of the umpires, it was agreed that tea would be extended to allow the teams to enjoy hot and cold food plus a glass or two of wine.

In response, the President’s XI, got off to a disappointing start by losing both openers before 20 had been scored (possibly after effects of the wine?). However, Martin Pluck (41) and Pete Sherwood (28) started the recovery with our intrepid groundsman showing his full range of shots which only come to light every three years on President’s Days.
The run chase then started with all batsmen entering into the spirit of the game. Jason Roberts, Ben Britton and James McKay (36 from 21 balls) then made winning a possibility.

The large crowd was silent as 3 runs were needed from the last ball with the last pair at the wicket. The ball was struck into a gap towards the boundary but was fielded and returned whilst the batsmen ran 2, leaving the scores level on 265 for 9 with Jason Roberts 59 not out. This was the perfect ending as neither side deserved to lose.

Much credit must go to the two captains, Terry Ballard and Simon Fitzgerald, for playing the game in the true spirit of a President’s Day fixture.

The Occasion
The game was watched by over a hundred spectators with many players from previous generations showing their support, renewing acquaintances and reliving past cricketing experiences.

Derek Maddison commented
“It was very enjoyable to see so many old faces. Everybody looked a little older, as ever, but seemingly in good health.
The first game I played was against Snaresbrook on the Nutter Field in July 1965. Nine of the side were there yesterday, the others being yourself, Paul, Dave, Mel, Jeff, Sam, John Caton and John Revell. The missing two were Albert Revell and Derek Caton.

Nobody had changed, perhaps a little greyer, same old jokes, the only one who hasn’t changed a bit was John Caton, he was bald then!”

Thank You
The President wishes to convey his sincere thanks to all members, past and present, who came along to the game. In particular thanks are due to Steve Ambridge and Terry Francis, the umpires and Angela and Helen Rotsey who sacrificed the social part of the day to sit in the score box and produce an immaculate score card.
