Match report An ultimately disappointing start to the league season for Fives but there were a number of positives to take from the game. After losing the toss we were stuck in on a wet green wicket (not the best after 1 morning of rain in the last month) and struggled to cope. Sheeny was hit on the head off a length and we capitulated to 90-6 courtesy of some decent bowling that was hard to get away. People do need to learn how to graft a bit longer on wickets that are not flat as a pancake, though. Not every wicket is like the Paddock on a hot day. Stu 'Jackpot' Knapman showed what could be done - he survived early on when it was difficult and then played some fantastic attacking shots to reach his maiden 1st team half century. A score of 186 all out in 42 overs was not ideal, but he gave us something to bowl at.
Without the injured JK and Rahul Bhome from the 1st choice attack, bowlers needed to step up. Waqas, Nick, Stuart, Ryan and new leg spinner Zeeshan all applied themselves well on a pitch that definitely got easier to bat on. Shenfield struggled early on, and were 27-3 with their top 3 batters out. Keeper Kliber played a very sensible innings and marshalled them home 7 wickets down with 9 overs to spare. Fives claim 5 points and head to Gidea Park next week, again with Sheeny Edwards in the hotseat as Skipper.
