Gidea Park & Romford v Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 14 May 2011 at 12.30 pm
Fives and Heronians Cricket Club Won By 22 Runs
Match report
Fives & Heronians secured an excellent first SNEL division one league victory of the season at Gidea Park & Romford on Saturday by 22 runs in a match where the Paddock side showed great bouncebackability on a number of occasions.
Having lost the toss and been inserted to bat on a good looking wicket but under leaden skies, Fives slipped to 40-3 after 12 overs of the 50 overs-a-side match with the top three all back in the pavilion – captain Gary Edwards pinned lbw for 2, Phil Apps bowled attempting a flick to leg for 4 and Ed Buxton caught driving at point for 17.
Ben Britton scored 21 of the 30 he added with Glen Jackson in 10 overs for the 4th wicket before he was caught at mid-wicket at 70-4 after 22 overs.
Jackson and Nick Rotsey repaired the early damage with sensible batting in the face of tight bowling by Gidea off-spinner Zia and medium pacer Lingala with a 5th wicket stand of 24 in 9 overs before Lingala got through the defences of Jackson to end his defiant innings of 27 from 86 balls.
Rahul Bhome joined Nick Rotsey for an innings top partnership of 62 to continue the good work of Jackson with firstly more rebuilding before pushing for late innings runs until Bhome was bowled attempting a heave off the impressive and returning Ejaz Khan (5-36 off 10 overs) for 31 scored off 44 balls with 4 boundaries.
With seven overs remaining in the innings a score of under 200 was on the cards but in reality a further 63 runs were collected which proved to be the difference in the sides as Gidea gambled keeping off-spinner Razzaq bowling from the A12 end – his 9 overs went at a cost of 70.
Rotsey moved to 44 from 62 with 2 fours and a six before he was bowled for an innings top score – an excellent knock combining early defence and later aggression.
Then Stuart Knapman continued his fine batting form after his 50 last week with 29 off just 22 balls which included two clubbed sixes off Razzaq – the later was palmed ‘over the bar’ by the fielder Tarr into the nets.
Muhammad Zafar (5) and Ryan Cunningham (9 not out) provided useful support for Knapman as Fives closed their innings on a very respectable 219-9 with Knapman run out of the last ball attempting a second bye.
Gidea got off a solid start in their reply putting away a few ‘four balls’ that were on offer with elegant ease and moved to 35-1 inside the 9th over before Waqas Javaid trapped home skipper Russ Collard lbw for 14.
That wicket and the introduction of slow left-armer Ryan Cunningham and Stuart Knapman into the attack stemmed the flow of runs and the inevitable pressure lead to Tarr falling lbw to Cunningham for a painstaking 1 run off 25 balls
The very next over Knapman had opener Zia well caught by Zafar for 31 to an uncharacteristic loose shot and at 55-3 after 17 overs Fives had clawed their way back into the match yet again.
Collier and Francis started rebuilding the Park innings in much the same way as Jackson and Rotsey had earlier in the day with a stand of 40 in 12 overs until Bhome - playing his first match of season - had Francis neatly caught behind by Jackson for 22.
At this stage the run-rate was already more than 6 runs-per-over and was steadily rising to nearly 9’s as Bhome and leg-spinner Zafar kept Collier and new batsman Razzaq in check – Zafar bowling consecutive maidens in an excellent 10 over spell costing just 36 and Bhome conceding just 10 singles in his opening 5 overs.
The turning point appeared to come during Bhome’s 6th over – the 37th of the innings – as Razzaq began an assault on the off-spinner with an on-driven six and then two further maximums and a four of the same calibre in Bhome’s next over and with 10 overs remaining the target was back down to 6.8 an over.
Edwards brought back his ‘trump cards’ in Knapman and Cunningham and a breakthrough came in the 44th over as the later bowled Razzaq attempting a sweep for an excellent 52 in 53 balls having added 79 with Collier.
Cunningham then took 2 wickets in his 9th over with the lbw of Choudhry and knocking over Lingala’s castle first ball with the quicker one to leave Gidea 180-7.
At this stage Collier had no choice but to go for glory having used up 87 balls for 46 runs and despite hitting Bhome’s first ball of the next over for six he attempted the same shot to the 4th ball and was well caught at long-off by Buxton in what was ‘third time lucky’ having dropped two catches during the afternoon.
At 189-8 with three overs to go Cunningham completed a superb ‘michelle’ with a return catch off Carver and Knapman returned from the other end to bowl Khan and complete an excellent 22 run win for Fives – the pick of the bowlers Cunningham returned figures of 10-1-31-5 and Knapman 8.4-1-37-2.
This was an excellent team effort and despite some nervy moments everyone held it together when it mattered to secure the result. It’s also good to watch three varying spinners bowl in tandem and hopefully they can continue to keep sides at bay and collect regular wickets during the season.
After two matches, Fives lie 5th in division one on 25 points and entertain Chingford at The Paddock next Saturday.
